Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

Went to the Oilers/Kings game on wednesday. The Kings won and i was so stoked. I took some crappy cell phone pics of anyone really wants to see

but the Avs are within 2 points of the division lead and if the playoffs started today, 4 of the 8 teams in the West would be from the Northwest division

Indeed, this is such a rough season for us. I wish Hejduk would step up!

As a Penguins fan, I can sympathize with ya. We've lost several key players-- not least of all Sidney Crosby.

We've tried getting a Sports forum before - always a no-go, for whatever reason.

That Nash goal was amazing. Some good hockey in Ohio right now.

So ... almost the All-Start break. How's your team doin'?

^After last night, tops. :D But I'm still a bit unsettled over our astounding--albeit rare--ability to lose a game before it even begins. I think back to the 2007 first round series between Detroit and Calgary, and I see similarities when the Flames don't seem to be with it, or fail to show up completely. Could an embarrassing blow out like that really happen again?

It is also nice to see some of our other players step up tis year: Huselius is amazing! And I will cry if we don't find a way to lock up Langkow after this year. I keep waiting for Matt Lombardi to really kick ass, but that doesn't want to happen.

Talk about trading Alex Tanguay began the day after he got here, but I quite like him. Doesn't score a lot, but he might be one of the best play makers I have ever seen in Calgary. Really fun to watch, too.

Anyone going to be watching the All Stars weekend? I'll pass on the all star game, but the skills competition is usually kind of fun. I rather enjoyed the Young Stars Game last year... we'll see how this weekend goes and how much time I want to spend sprawled out on the couch.

^Holy crap! I had heard about the goal too but hadn't seen it either. He completely undressed the defenseman!

I'm surprised nobody has posted about John Ferguson, Jr. being fired as the Leafs' GM and Cliff Fletcher being brought in to replace him on an interim basis.

Personally, I think it's too late to do anything about this season, but Fletcher has pulled rabbits out of his hat before (he engineered the 10-player trade with Calgary that brought Doug Gilmour to Toronto, as well as the one that brought Mats Sundin in exchange for Wendel Clark).

I'm just wondering if Fletcher has any rabbits left.

It's not inconceivable that the Leafs could get on a hot streak, or Toskala plays out of his mind and they squeak into the playoffs. Unlikely, but I doubt you'd have to look too hard to find a precedent.

I, for one, didn't think the board of MLSE would have enough of a clue to do it before the season was over. The simple fact that they've acted in advance of the trade deadline means that they can make this a productive, if not successful, season.

I'm not really a fan of Fletcher, but all he really has to do is unload as much salary as he can, get as many prospects and picks as he can, and if he's still GM when the free agency period starts... sign a few (decent) players. Easier said than done, of course, but if they've truly given him the freedom to do what needs to be done then he's really in a no-lose situation. The team already blows, the worst that can happen is that they don't improve, and that means good draft position for a couple of years. Not only that, but the age for unrestricted free agency drops again for the next year or two, meaning that quality young players will be available, well, younger, providing they don't sign long-term first.

I actually think the Leafs have a lot of options, and it all starts with convincing Sundin that he can help the team by accepting a trade.

Big ups to both UGO and TrekBBS for the All-Star game ad on the top of the page. It looks like they're finally getting with the program. :bolian:

I had been trying to get a link to post that for everyone, but I kept forgetting to. Props to bro for getting it done.

I'm not much of a hockey fan, unless there is something unusual to add to it. In this case, though I don't really follow them I have noted how well the Blue Jackets have been playing of late. They just wrapped up a crucial 5 game road trip, perhaps the biggest trip in the team's short history. Significant, given that they are the NHL's only team to never make the playoffs.

Last night's win over the Blackhawks was something else according to this morning's paper. Intense and hard-hitting with goalie Pascal LeClaire gets a league leading 8th shutout... and he wasn't named to the All-Star team? :wtf:

According to the media, the Senators were in a slump.

Apparently, if they lose one game it's a slump.

Alfie with 7 points last night leaps to the top of scoring race! And it's looking like Heatley might be back in just a couple more weeks. If only one of Gerber or Emery could play consistently it'd look great in Ottawa.

They are done, much likr the canuck could be if they don't start playing at 100% for the whole 60 min.
anyhow,
The Toronto Maple Laughs are a joke with their management.

What do the Toronto Blue Jays, Toronto Rapters and the Toronto Maple Leafs have in common?

None of them can play hockey.

My team, the Habs are doing pretty well, only 6 points or three wins behind the number one placed Sens. Here's hoping that they continue *knock on wood*

I would like to know why exactly the Sharks are in first place? Yeah It's good and all and I'm enjoying it, but this team is awfully inconsistent and I just wonder if the rest of the Pacific Division is just that bad. I know that's not the case since the Ducks and Stars are pretty good teams but I can't figure out why the Sharks are in first. They really need to figure out how to win at home and hopfully the post break play will be a lot better. Right now if there was a seven game series against Detroit, Dallas or the Ducks, the Sharks don't have a chance.

Well they are in the same division as the kings. Who are unfortunately the worst team in the entire league. So that is part of the reason why. As for the other teams, I cant really answer that. I think its best just to roll with it.
