Hockey Talk - 2007-2008 Season

Detroit might need to give up the Hockeytown title if they can't fill their arena for a potential Cup clinching game
I'm pretty sure it'll be full on Monday. Last two games a lot of people were torn between the Wings and the Pistons. That's no longer an issue. We'll give up the Hockeytown title when we stop being so damn superior. ;)

Where did they get this "hockey-town" business from, anyway?
Wikipedia states:

Hockeytown is a nickname for the city of Detroit, Michigan, which arose in 1996 thanks to a marketing campaign by the city's NHL franchise, the Detroit Red Wings. The nickname, over time, has gained national and international recognition.
According to Sports Illustrated, Saint Paul, Minnesota can also be called Hockeytown, due not only to the NHL team (Minnesota Wild) but also its college, high school and youth programs.[1] Warroad, Minnesota has also been called Hockeytown, USA over four decades prior to the Red Wings' use of the name.[2] As of the 2006–2007 season, there has been a grassroots movement in Buffalo, NY (home to the NHL's Buffalo Sabres) to label Buffalo as "The New Hockeytown" due to the overwhelming fan presence outside HSBC Arena during games, as well as, throughout the community.[3][4] Despite this, "Hockeytown, USA" is still a registered trademark of Ilitch Holdings, Inc., the parent company of the Red Wings, and the Red Wings will continue to use the name for the foreseeable future.
Also, there's the fact that the Wings are a fucking AWESOME hockey team. :)

I had the awesome opportunity to go to Game 3 of the series in the Igloo in Pittsburgh-- the crowd was so loud in support of their team; my voice was almost gone by the end of the game! It's beginning to look like that may have been the best possible game to go to, as well-- though I'll never give up hope until it's over!

Anyway, my young cousin was at the game along with me, and before the game, he asked his dad if Pittsburgh would get to be Hockeytown if they won this series. Cute! :)

If the Wings clinch the Cup (which they will), then they have EARNED the title of Hockeytown. Since when does attendance trump on-ice skill and ability? And yes, there will be a full house for Game 5.

Michigan has the worst economy of any state in the country. Tens of thousands of blue collar workers in Metro Detroit have been laid off or bought out by the auto companies and other related industries. That's going to have an effect on game attendance, there just aren't many people in Michigan right now who have the money to spend on a night out at the game. The same type of people who usually go to Wings games are looking for jobs and worrying about their own financial futures.

I thought we were talking about the *town*, not the *team*. Hockey Team, yes, they are, a very good one.

I'm glad we've established that. Add to that the fact that their town is Detroit, a town which contains many very enthusiastic hockey fans, and there's the name. Hockeytown. I suspect you're merely jealous that Hockeytown isn't some place in Canada. At least its nearby. ;)

RIP Luc :(

I dont see Detriot giving that up so easily, as much as I'd like them giving up the name and all. Anywhom, go Pens!

So why haven't they been showing up to games?
This has been explained. Pay attention. 20,000 strong in the Joe tonight! TRIPLE OVERTIME! The crowd is staying well after midnight to see the Wings win it, on a weeknight no less. THAT'S devotion. I don't know whether I want to kill Fleury or shake his fucking hand.

So, naysayers - if Detroit shouldn't be Hockeytown, who should???

God. This game is intense. I'm not sure how much more I can take, damn Fleury.

4-minute penalty? Dammit.

game 6 baby!

Sykora called his shot earlier, told Pierre McGuire that he'd be the one to score

great game. this is why hockey's the best game on the planet

Well shit...

Great game, though. Gotta hand it to Pittsburgh on that one. They played like fucking warriors out there. We'll see if they can keep it up for two more games.

Awesome game. Not as intense for me as the Sharks 4 OT thriller which ended in disappointment, but this is why I love playoff Hockey. I wish we could have went into the 4th OT though. Just to continue the game more. Still, I wonder if the complexion of this series has changed because of the Pen's win tonight. Yeah they are still down 3-2, but winning a game like that will do wonders to a teams confidence and motivation.
