Historical stories not covered enough by Hollywood

I'd also agree that more WWI coverage would be nice. As mentioned, most of it used as a backdrop rather than actual events surrounding the war. They could make a great movie focusing on WW1 pilots for example, and while we have Flyboys, I'd like to see something a little more in a serious vein the way in a similar tone to the many WWII movies. Yes, that's what I meant - something that covers the actual goings-on of the war. Not something like Flyboys or War Horse, which only uses the war as a backdrop in order to tell another story.

Maybe a World War I version of Band of Brothers isn't the right analogy, as that mini-series focuses on the events surrounding people who were still living. I'd like to see something along the lines of a Saving Private Ryan (at least the opening of that movie) or Gettysburg that deals with the actual events of WWI.

Well, it’s been a while since The Blue Max (1966). I don’t know how historically accurate that picture was, but who cares when you have Ursula Andress wearing nothing but two small towels.

Yep, exactly. It must not be that hard to make a good WW1 epic. I'd like for someone to take at serious look at the war. In terms of modern day movies, aside from Passchendaele, there hasn't really been anything substantial. When they do make movies about the era with parts set in WWI, it's almost always sentimental in tone, almost always backed with a romance plotline and details are almost always skipped over. The one recent WWI movie that stood out for me was Joyeux Noel, and that to me shows that WWI can be a great setting. I still think that a mini-series might be the way to go though as there's a lot to cover and would likely give more justice to telling it in detail.

As for WWI pilots, well, lots of them were heroes and considered flying aces, especially the ones that shot down many planes. Yet we don't really have a movie covering that. It really feels like a lost era in general.

Garibaldi would be a fantastic study for film, or a series of films. The man just lived too much life for a few hours of film to really capture.

The U.S. actually does have a solid history of third party activity - especially in the early days of the republic. As late as the 1960s we still had third parties that could legitimately make attempts at the presidency. Since then, unfortunately, both major parties have made it virtually impossible for any other group to gain any traction.

One thing I hope the world will one day learn from Italy, life will go on despite the leadership. Take the US, obsessed with leadership in the world and the nation. Led perpetually from one crisis to the next. If only folks would wake up and realize the mail will get delivered, the roads and sewers will get repaired, and most of the humdrum will happen much as yesterday just because folks can and will get back to work as they did yesterday. I hope one day they will learn that life can and will go on regardless of, and in spite of the people in power.
