Also, I never noticed that the guy that played geologist Fisher in "The Enemy Within" was the same guy that beamed down with Pike and Co. on Talos IV. His hairstyle is different so I never really noticed it until now. I like to think they were the same characters and stayed aboard like Spock. Of course in reality they were just background and bit parts, but it was a nice bit of visual continuity in the early eps, like seeing Cage era uniforms in the background and women wearing trousers.
I don't think they called him Fisher in "The Cage," though, did they? It seems unlikely for it to be the same character, as a human would show his age after 13 years much more than Spock did. Maybe "The Enemy Within" guy could be the son of "The Cage" guy?

Johnny, I think a 30 geologist would look about the same as a 45 year old geologist, at least in the 23rd century.
The geologist appears to be an officer in “The Cage”. Maybe he was reduced in rank (two steps) for some reason.Yeah, it could easily be the same character. He's not very ambitious, to still be just a technician for over a decade,
But hey, a career sitting at the navigation subsystems station couldn't be all bad, right?
Not everyone is cut out to be a captain.
A scientific specialist that's mostly concerned with research about new alien planets could do a lot worse than being assigned to a starship that routinely visits strange new worlds.
Good steady work. They'll always need somebody to do it. On the other hand, it doesn't have to be you.
Q turning Picard into a junior grade science lieutenant was played as though those people have pitiable existences and just rubbed the wrong way.
