Hemsworth confirms that he is in ST4

Great stuff. I have a feeling, though, that if this movie isn't the success Paramount want it to be then that could be it for this cast. What a world we live in; Beyond gets good reviews and makes over $300 at the box office and yet it's still considered unsuccessful in some quarters.

I hope they are for sure moving forward at this point. Chris could have just been going on discussions from months back about his role. I know the Engage podcast also mentioned they were moving forward with it, but I wish Paramount would give us a 100% "Yes, absolutely we're doing it" public statement since Beyond has been out a while now.

Thats a damned shame. Much as I like Hemsworth, I was hoping for something else from ST4. His involvement suggests both another big budget action adventure format, and a bloody time travel movie...

Yeah I'm not exactly thrilled about a time travel movie either, but I loved ST09, and the whole premise of the reboots, so I'll reserve judgement. Let's hope it's done well and not a Terminator Genysis style mess.

You have the advantage of me - I thought '09 was kind of OK and the series has gone steadily downhill since.

I hated Beyond and was (and still am) hoping the 4th film would turn it around.

Now that they’ve gone through all this trouble to establish a ‘new’ timeline I’d hate to see them push the reset button.

My guess (or rather hope) is that George Kirk somehow survived the Narada attack. Due to some ripple effect from the intrusion in the Kelvin-timeline, George’s aging process has been slowed down. He’s a prisoner on Rura Penthe. After 20+ years he’s finally able to send a signal to Starfleet that he’s still alive.
Starfleet ignores his cry for help since they don’t want to start a war with the Klingon Empire. James Kirk finds out about his dad and sets up his own rescue mission with the help of his crew.

I think a Yesterday's Enterprise type adaption would be the way to go.

I like that idea very much, but I'm wondering if a Mirror, Mirror type of story might be less challenging for general audiences to swallow. A transporter incident displaces Captain Kirk and crew into a parallel universe with an overly aggressive and corrupt Starfleet -- at the top of which rules Emperor George Kirk who acts as the principal antagonist for our heroes.

Crap, I was hoping that story was just a rumour. Ah, well, I suppose it'll be nice to see Chris Hemsworth have a more meaningful role in a Trek movie, if nothing else.

look they HAVE to do Time Travel in NuTrek4 - or they would not be keeping pace with aping the original TOS feature films in some respect. ;)

It's cool they got Hemsworth. He was a no-name when he appeared in Star Trek. But now he's big as Thor.

Maybe a sequel to the most popular segment of JJTrek is the way to go. Time travel and throw in an extended cameo from Old Kirk somehow and the combined star power of Pine/Hemsworth/Shat ..might..just bring it back to STID box office

That's because it only made its money back. Most studios like to make a healthy profit after they make a movie not just make the money back that they spent to make it. It needed to get past 350,000,000 or so to start making a profit. It may have had some good reviews but it was not and should not be considered successful because it didn't make a profit.

Chris Hemsworth confirmed that Star Trek 4 is happening and it is a little further off than the Marvel stuff. So, son will meet his father for the first time. It will be the central theme. Well, from the looks of it, they are not going to change this plot.

But Abrams is smart. JJ is expert in time travel stories. He knows that Chris Hemsworth's character in Star Trek 2009 was well-liked. The Kelvin sequence in ST09 contains strong scenes of violence and drama, and the audience was very touched. Furthermore, Chris Hemsworth is in Avengers and he is, physically, a attractive guy.
Good ingredients.
No idea if it will work.
