Have Episodes Been Split Up / Merged?

Also, Jonathan Frakes has said that Riker wasn't planned to appear in episode 7 when he was directing episodes 4 and 5 so that seemed to be a late decision to the season's plan -

Chabon has said otherwise. Also they announced Riker and Troi were coming back before Frakes even directed those episodes, so he must have just worded what he said weirdly.

On the Deadline podcast he said it was as they were breaking the story arcs before the actual scripts were written............so not to start with but NOT a last minute addition either.

Don't know about that part. IIRC, it was announced Frakes would be directing episodes last spring, while Riker and Troi appearing in an episode wasn't announced until Comic Con in the summer.

But still before the episodes he directed were filmed

Do you know the labels for the rest of the season?

According to Memory Alpha, the 10th episode is 109. Seems to suggest nothing was added out of order. Though an initial run of 9 episodes would be odd - modern series tend to go with 8 or 10.

Apparently the last two episodes are a two-parter entitled Et in Arcadia Ego.

To be fair, that doesn't necessarily indicate that it wasn't in the works prior to that, just that it wasn't announced. They sometimes time these things out.

I think I saw an interview where they explained that the decision to expand the first two episodes into three was made early enough in the writing process that they were able to rearrange their plans for later episodes so that the story all still fit into the ten episodes allotted.

Yes it does.

Instead of people being snide assholes, maybe they can stop to think that if two 45 minute episodes were filmed but then edited together into a 60 minute episode, there are potentially 30 minutes worth of cut scenes.

The example I gave before about Titans was perfect. I also recall about 13 years ago, there was a 65 minute episode of Smallville that was cut down to 45 minutes, after they had already shown clips from the scenes cut.

They were substantial fucking scenes too. Lex Luthor killing his dad. Lex Luthor discovering Clark’s identity. Supergirl leaving Earth.

Instead, they spread those cut scenes across the next five episodes, with lots of filler added to stretch the episodes, and additional scenes written around the reinserted scenes.

It resulted in a poorly structured final 5 episodes of the show, with plot holes where one of the lead characters was dead but because they cut the scene, they then had to subsequently cut a few references out poorly.

So you want to ask again why it matters?
