Hats???

I'd like to hear The Women's POV on this item, do they think women will still be putting their attributes on display that long from now?

You really think that attractive people (females and males) would suddenly choose to cover up attractive parts of their bodies just because a few hundred years have passed?

As I said earlier, Jean Shrimpton (October 30, 1965) was making the mini a symbol of women's liberation and Grace wanted Janice Rand to show that by the 23rd century, women would have "made it" as equals (aired November 10, 1966).

Why do traditions start? Practicality. Hats with brims keep the sun out of your eyes and mitigate heatstroke.. On a sailing vessel it made sense so you could see what you did in bright sunlight and shade your head.

I can see your point, but with all the aliens in Starfleet, it seems odd that they'd require hats. Can you imagine some of the weird headed creatures with red stewardess-esque hats on their heads? When I see them on humans, I think, "Would you like a pillow for your neck, sir?" and on aliens I think of the Ferrengi in "Take Me Out To The Holosuite", some creatures just weren't meant to have hats on.

I don't mind the hats or the uniform styles. Its the monochrome red that bothers me.

Really? I like the uniforms. What's wrong with them?

the only thing missing is a propeller.

It's cloaked.

Cute.

I actually don't mind hats. Enterprise should've kept them beyond the three episodes in which they appeared (Broken Bow, Strange New World & Hatchery). It lent something extra to that whole Crimson Tide submarine vibe the set had going on.

There's something similar to the grey hats from those Spy photos already in The Cage. Without checking the topic, I'm sure somebody will have already mentioned this. It's onscreen for a split second, in Pike's cabin. I'm kind of disappointed it took Star Trek this long and even in the new film, it's just an academy uniform not serving officier wear.

Its a matter of personal taste. I don't like monochrome bright colors in a military uniform.

In the days of technicolor television, it made sense to have red shirts, gold shirts, and blue shirts, (Yellow was unacceptable-go figure) and black trousers; but why can't the cadets wear blue or grey here? Remember what I wrote about tradition? Looking like dorks, as cadets, is traditional, dressing like a target for a bullfight is not.

I didn't say that, I only asked women what they thought would happen. To answer your question though, no, I don't think so.

And I refer you back to my rant on page 1. As a woman, I think it's ridiculous that women have more freedom of dress than men do. I can wear pants, a skirt (of any length), a dress, short shorts, long shorts, a skort even (though I would avoid this) and men basically can wear pants and long shorts. It's silly and in the future, especially in a unified Earth in a Federation of Planets I think there would be a variety of things worn by both sexes, because in our own day and age men of different cultures wear what we would call skirts or dresses, so I'd imagine any Starfleet uniform would come in about six different varieties which anyone could wear as they pleased. Plus, I like guys in skirts (my first reaction to hearing the casting of the movie Troy was "Brad Pitt and Eric Bana in skirts? I am so there!"). Well-formed men's legs are as sexy as to women as well-formed women's legs are to men. If our country didn't have such narrow ideas of masculinity and such a culturally accepted homophobia attached to things like a guy being well-groomed and dressing in such a way as to show off his attributes, I could be enjoying a whole lot more viewing of men's legs. And I'm a little disappointed that this movie appears to be adhering to the rather lame Star Trek tradition of having most people dress exactly alike, and that being on a model of Western tradition. I wish there was more of a sense of a merged global human culture.

And, the hats look dorky. But they're cadets. Cadets are supposed to look dorky. It builds character or something.

I LIKE the idea of hats. I HATE the hats shown in the photographs. They come to a point on top. It looks very nerdish as the only thing missing is a propeller. A ball cap, however, would be great. I just hope the future doesn't include Cadet Beanies.

Those red caps remind me of the US Army's utility caps of the early '60s. They were very unpopular because of their pointy appearance (they were called "the beanie"), and because they were 100% polyester, too hot for summer, especially somewhere like Vietnam.

Styling aside, having hats as at least an optional part of a uniform is a great idea. Don't tell me Picard didn't sometimes wish he had some coverage...

IF you look at the pictures, however, you will see that the females are ALL wearing skirts (and they are all miniskirts). That is sexist. It appears that women really don't have a choice.

It at least appears that they didn't make the choice you would have liked.

Besides, those photos show at least two different lengths of skirts, and some women wearing pants.

Treksetbig1.jpg. You have several women in longer skirts and a couple like the blonde with her hair in a bun (No hat) wearing pants... Also two women near the steps in grey chatting wearing pants. There are deffinately two different length red skirts two, a mini and a knee length... Treksetbig3 You see that not all the cadets uniforms are Red, some are Grey. Those also have the knee length skirts, but as they allow the pants set, they don't have the Miniskirt....

I see some grey chicks in pants, but I'm talking the cadets in red.

~String
THe grey uniforms are also cadets as they are lined up for the ceremony in Treksetbig3.jpg..... Atleast I'm assuming they are cadets because we know that the graduates have the department color coded uniforms and as far as I know those are Red, Yellow, blue, there is no Grey department.

As I said we already know what the Starfleet uniform colors are so I'm assuming they are cadets, maybe one group are officer school and the other normal service. Not sure, but I don't see why the they wouldn't be cadets as they are all hanging together.

Personally, I think they are teachers or proctors, or something else.

~String
Too many of them and the teachers wouldn't line up on the parade field. How many graduations and we are obviously looking at a graduation scene would the teachers line up with the students?
