Hats???

...Although to be sure, "optional" and "uniform" generally don't go too well together. The purpose of a uniform is to enforce a certain common look, after all. (That, and to make it cheaper to mass-produce the clothing for the military masses.)

I dig the idea of hats. Their lack is a conceit of television production, where studio lights create extremely difficult shadows on the faces of people who wear anything bigger than a skullcap - whereas any location shooting is going to demonstrate that it is actually a good idea in practice to have some shadow on your face!

However, some militaries tend to have certain hangups about wearing hats indoors, and a starship is all indoors. Granted that the USN tradition doesn't go against ceremonial headgear on the bridge of a vessel, but there'd still be something jarring about having Kirk don a baseball cap there. (Archer never wore his on the bridge, now did he?)

What is so "liberating" about making both sexes dress the same? Or calling a woman Sir or Mister? I dearly hope that by the 23rd century they have got over this awful modern politically correct idea of making everybody unisex. Although in reality unisex usually just means everybody looks butch.

In the two Trek pilots women wore trousers and it was a female cast member who thought that skirts would look more feminine. Alexander the Great managed to conquer most of the known world with an army who didn't wear trousers.

Also, I believe even in TOS the skirts were at the request of the female actresses who wanted to show off, all though that could be another story passed down through a game of telephone.

Well I heard it in person from Grace Lee Whitney in 1982. She really resented being made to get into a pair of second hand ST pilot trousers (so to speak) for the first series publicity stills, and went straight to William Ware Theiss to request he design a sexy skirt for her to wear when filming started. Jean Shrimpton (October 30, 1965) was making the mini a symbol of women's liberation and Grace wanted Janice Rand to show that by the 23rd century, women would have "made it" as equals (aired November 10, 1966).

To be sure, female military personnel currently have the option of wearing slacks or skirts with certain types of uniforms. Why should they be more restricted in the future?

Well, Pike had a hat, too. It was sitting on top of that huge TV in his quarters...

Yes he did :techman:

Therefore if we see Pike's quarters we need to see his hat and that big ole Magnavox TV (with rabbit ears antenna of course)

Seriesly, I like the hats
I LIKE the idea of hats. I HATE the hats shown in the photographs. They come to a point on top. It looks very nerdish as the only thing missing is a propeller. A ball cap, however, would be great. I just hope the future doesn't include Cadet Beanies.

I guess I should be happy that they aren't berets or sombreros.

If you go here: STXI Movie Pics you can see that the uniforms have hats. Up 'till now I've been very open to the changes, but hats just don't work. For one, it's a very human idea that works because of the shape of the human head. Consider how laughable Nog's baseball hat was in "Take Me Out To The Holosuite"? They should have just left the uniforms as is and not included hats.

Free Hat!

Hats are no biggie to me nor canon, we've never seen the Academy at this time in history. (cannot remember if Academy scenes in TNG had them or not but if not, they dropped them sometime later. Probably because they aren't attractive)

It should be noted that I also take umbrage with the dumb-assed skirts. It's fracking sexist.

So, um, two-hundred and some-odd years into the future, women are little more than T&A for the crew. Huh?

I'd like to hear The Women's POV on this item, do they think women will still be putting their attributes on display that long from now?

I think the real reason for them is not women, but the boyish men creating/watching this movie.

Given the venom in this forum, I'm surprised that no one has described the people who decided to have hats in this movie as asshats.

I like wearing a skirt to the office..... just for the sake of looking nice. And it's comfy, too. So, I don't think it's sexist, if there is an option, you know, skirt or trousers.

Who knows? Maybe in the future, people are enlightened enough not to see women who wear skirts as "little more than T&A"?

You think Jim Kirk never noticed a nice pair of gams on a lady crewmember? ;)
And, let's be "out of universe" frank. To their credit, the uniforms and costumes did not lead to objectifying women on the show, But overall, William Theiss's creations probably did more to attract and keep the interest of young teenage boys in the show than any cool weapon or monster did.

And, wasn't there a man in a skirted uniform aboard the Enterprise in a very early TNG episode?

The Crew on "Enterprise" wore hats. It may look dumb occassionally, but it's not new. My only concern, is that these particular hats make them look more like Star Wars Imperial Officers, especially the gray ones. It's not Star Wars J.J. it's Star Trek

I don't mind the skirts either. At least these ones are a bit more formal looking, like any number of female dress uniforms, that have existed

I wondered when sombrero's would come up.

Nothing wrong with skirts as a garment as long as they aren't absurdly short (you'd spend too much time worrying if you were flashing the crew and couldn't get your job done :p) and not chilly but that raises a whole other issue of heat control and protection that the uniforms should be providing. The fabric should be some amazing high tech substance that can regulate body temperature regardless of the prevailing conditions on planets and provide some protection against energy weapons.

These people should not be going into battle wearing pajamas, but they can go into battle wearing body armor that is so light and flexible it looks like pajamas. As for the skirts, if the tights (which I assume are also part of the uniforms) are also made of this high-tech fabric, they serve the same function.

The hats from those photos look dorky. Extending the body-armor hypothesis, it would make sense for active duty uniforms to include a hood or cowl that can snap on and protect the head from heat loss and phaser blasts. The neck also needs protection. Ideally the face would be covered as well. Maybe we could say there's a mask so transparent we can't even see it since masks really aren't Starfleet style.

Why do traditions start? Practicality. Hats with brims keep the sun out of your eyes and mitigate heatstroke.. On a sailing vessel it made sense so you could see what you did in bright sunlight and shade your head.

Now enter the steam age with engine rooms and cluttered overheads. The hat restricts your line of sight up, and it becomes a hazard to be caught in the machinery. Same reason for short hair and no beards-safety. Then it becomes custom.

I don't mind the hats or the uniform styles. Its the monochrome red that bothers me.
