The story was excellent. The only thing that buggered me about this show was how they threw continuity out the window by turning the defense attorney into a Klingon pacifist, when we know all Klingons are warriors.

That's not true at all. In TNG we got to see the religious class of Klingons in the episode where Kaless {sp?} "returns."

Despite the fact that I'm not a huge fan of Enterprise, I'm giving credit where credit is due. One of the best episodes of Enterprise I've seen.

B+

Not an A because I think it would have been more fully realized as a two-parter.

If they start cranking out more episodes like this, I'll have to start rethinking my position regarding Enterprise.

The story will continue in later episodes of ENT towards the end of the seaon. I can't wait! :D

*cough*Undiscovered Country Ripoff*cough*

So you dismiss an intelligent and enjoyable episode solely for it being a "ripoff?"

Yes...lack of original material is this shows biggest fault.

You might as well toss your TV out the window and never go to the theaters again. Originality is extremely rare these days.

I finally got to see it a coupla hours ago

Pretty good idea to it. ending was a little predictable. some unanswered questions. I might not like it as much the second time. i like that its connected to the next klingon eps (and that theres now a price on archer's head hee hee ;)) J.G. Hertzler (sp?) was awesome as usual & did Reed look ever so hot in that fur?!!! :D

Bah...they don't even try...a lot of the dialog was even off the movie sript, I think....the fur coats were leftover movie props.

I think Everything was left over... The costumes, the set panels...

The lack of Originality is what's destroying society, not just E... It's as though peoples' brains became simplified over the past decade or so... There's no effort anymore to bring forth New material--it's all drag-and-ripoff the tried and true... Make a fast buck, Grab the money and run...

It's no wonder that I can't find a mate that lives up to my standards of perfection...

I thought the attempt to show Klingon society as going through a complicated shift toward militarism - and lord knows we can find that process going on in any number of situations in the here and now to give a feasable back story - was commendable, but I don't trust the producers' sense of how cultures work to do anything interesting with it. In fact they don't really believe in culture, still, they still believe in species.

Err, sorry, esoteric reference... ;)

It's that whole reflecting contemporary society thing isn't it? But which society was the episode meant to reflect? Certainly not the United States.

D. The stuff they stole from ST VI was fun to an extent. Seeing Martok again was nice. But what the hell? No explanation about how Archer got into Klingon custody, and an ending that proves they're not even trying. Almost makes me miss Voyager. Almost.

I couldn't agree with you more. Besides that, I'm so sick of the Hack Brother lack of creativity of vision for ending these episodes. They are pulling the same crap that they did on Voyager where they have a relatively decent episode going, then they tie up all the lose ends in the last couple of minutes of the show.

They didn't take the time to explain how Archer was picked up. They were courteous enough to allow us to see the situation that lead up to his being picked up.

How many shows have they done now where Archer is in some sort of prison situation? Didn't we have that episode where he was being transported for trial prison with Trip?

Than again I guess on the off weeks from Archer being halled in for prison, we can have the other stale stand by of T'Pol being threatened to be recalled by the Vulcan high command.

This was another boring episode that did not deserve to be associated with Star Trek. :borg:

It was good but I hoped they'd push the envelope a bit more with this story. We all knew Archer wasn't going to stay in Rura Penthe and I wonder why the writers didn't opt to keep Archer there for two or three episodes. There was enough story for a two parter in my opinion and I would've liked to see the crew try and fail to reason with the Klingons and try to get Archer back, perhaps even until the very end of the season in which the story concluded in a dramatic finale. Still, this episode was a step in the right direction. I really like the Kolos character and the trail was well done. I'd rate this episode a 7/10.

Probably one of the best episode of the season. Good script, good performance by our dear Gen. Martok. Even Archer was acting like a Starfleet captain.

Now, if this level of quality could be maintained for more then one episode from time to time...

Didn't mean to imply that it was reflecting any particular contemporary society, just that we all know of societies where a military order has emerged as the thing that holds the entity together (ancient Rome, say, or Afghanistan).

The ST problem is that this all is alluded to without taking note of the complexities behind that kind of shift - threats from the outside, colonial involvements, and so on. In ST it just sort of happens. "And then, suddenly, we were under a military dictatorship. Who knew?"

And yet another disappointing ENT episode that doesn't deliver anything of originality.

When will people stop mistaking the throwing of small bones to the cognescenti - Coombs, Hertzler, Auberjonois - for intricate story-lines, character development, risk and consequences. Nothing that was said in the story had the force of passion. While I'm to emphathise with the Advocate's struggle in this increasingly militaristic society - I cannot for first of all, I know the Empire will grow in fact more corrupt (see Ezri's speech to Worf), and secondly, the militaristic Empire is the only one we have come to know through 30+ years of Star Trek and it is the one we expect. And in itself it does have nuances, it has been fleshed out for us. Now we are to turn our back's on that perception? To what? Klingons excited over holodecks - "I can see my house!".

It was the standard court-case done over and over. A small moment of common bond between Archer and the Advocate - a nice touch. A hint of deeper meaning, future relationships - which will someday came to naught of course. The Klingons will only develop into greater enemies of the un-formed Federation. Maybe Archer's blundering in leads to the strain. I dunno. All I know is that this show continues to disappoint rather than excite me.

Solid B

LOVED J.G. the Advocate

(and we've already mentioned the ending.)

It'll be interesting to see where this goes.

B+ or ***1/2/****

- It was good enough to forget most of the time that it was ripping off The Undiscovered Country wholesale.

- J.G. Hertzler was fantastic as always. His scene with Archer was great.

- Astounding visual effects as always too. I liked the look of the D-5 and the firefight was good.

- I kept thinking the courtroom was ON Rua Penthe for some reason. Probably because of the white-ish mountains. I didn't think we were in the capital city, though in this time period it's apparently in a snowy area.

- The ending was rushed, but still rather effective especially the final shot.

- Uh. No one was going to tell us how they captured Archer in the first place?
