GI Joe 2

^^^
Hasbro went cheap with the Lady Jaye figure though. They simply re-used and re-painted the body they used for Scarlett from their earlier G.I. Joe: Renegades line.

Fang Boat? Ninja Commando 4x4? They're still the Water Moccasin and the A.W.E Striker to me, dammit!

There's tons of speculation going around due to the director insinuating that he's focused on fixing the mistakes in Rise of Cobra.

ROC made a typical error that a lot of western films make... they try to be "neat and tidy" and over-explain things to the audience so that people don't have to wonder or speculate. Heck, this is the origin in western fiction of the monologue-prone villain who explains the entire plot of the story, at the end, so that the audience can be "educated".

So, ROC tried to tie the characters of Cobra Commander, the Baroness, and a member of the Joes together on a personal level. It was a dumb move, that instantly neutered the effectiveness of the villains by making them either dupes (Baroness) or overly explained (Cobra Commander, who is supposed to be mysterious and unknown.)

At the moment, fan speculation is that Retaliation will perform a retcon on who the real Cobra Commander has been all along, and that "Rex" in the first film was merely making a grab for power at the end by naming himself "Commander" and revealing the existence of an organization called Cobra. (Contrary to what it seems like, there's no indication in the first film that Rex is inventing Cobra on the spot. He's just playing the hand of a Cobra take-over of Destro's empire now that Destro has been used up.)

Ironically enough, this would go along with several story arcs in the Marvel Comics GI Joe series where several people made grabs for power to replace Cobra Commander.

Of course, the more lasting damage to a character is the Baroness... by not only making her the sister of a good guy, but dictating that her "evil" personality was the result of mind control now removed, they pretty much have no way to use her again without a contrived plot where she is somehow made evil again just because. And even if that happens there will be constant angst and wasted time by people trying to "save" her, restore her to normal, etc.

Actually they did that with too many main villains in the comics to the point that Destro, Baroness, Zartan and Storm Shadow had to be brainwashed into being evil again.

And many of them were tied into a member GI JOE, which happened to be Snake-Eyes, not Duke.

IIRC, what happened with RoC is they went ahead and filmed with a shit script due to the writer's strike. However, a lot of versions of the Rise of Cobra contained the "Rex" character, someone who never existed in any mythos. I guess some hack had to put their stamp on an existing property.

I thought the first was a goofy, fun, kinda mindless action flick, and I love that kind of stuff so I enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to this one. But there's so much stuff coming out that I want to see more, Avengers, TDKR, and Prometheus being the biggest, that I'll probably just wait and rent it on DVD.

Ugh. I hope not, that seems like an awful lot of effort focusing on what came before. A retcon like that would be very similar to the problem you lay out here:

i like those individual character posters. i'm actually really looking forward to this.

I'm definitely curious. I've read that Captain Robau himself is playing Cobra Commander. I forgot the Zombieland guys wrote the script for this as well and the score is being composed by Henry Jackman who did the excellent score for "X-Men: First Class".

The first Joe movie was so bad that this one is going to have to get universal acclaim for me to consider seeing it. The addition of the Rock is good and all, but I'm not thrilled that Bruce Willis has the time between other shitty movies and crap Die Hard sequels to show up in this.

I'll admit the trailer doesn't look as bad as the first one, just those stupid accelerator suits sure squashed any hopes that a watchable film was coming, but I just don't know if you come back from that.

They should've taken a couple of more years and gone full reboot. Ya know, like they do every time they fuck up the Hulk.

The Sleeper $200m film of summer '12

It's going to be written off by that group of people who just hated or were indifferent to the first without giving this one a chance on it's own merits. Never to give it a fair shake then be shocked why people are seeing the film.

It looks like they've done a pretty good job of injecting some new energy into what appeared to be a failed franchise. Faran Tahir as Cobra Commander (if true) and the retcon suggested above works for me. If this one succeeds, maybe we can get Destro and the Baroness back in a third installment.

a guy i know from a UK Joe site saw 10 minutes of footage (and he was embargoed until today) and his report on what he saw suggests that the CC in this movie is Rex, he just is/acts more like the 'classic' Cobra Commander.
