Spoilers Ghostbusters: Afterlife grade and discussion thread

How do you rate Ghostbusters: Afterlife

  • Total voters
    70
No, the last 40 minutes of the movie--down to the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster getting busy with one another and the shots at the new Gozer temple coinciding with exact replications of shots from the first movie, all the way down to the way they transform into Terror Dogs, plus the exact same music cues? That does.
Yes, it does repeat some elements of the first one, but everything leading up to that is different, and even the stuff that repeats still plays out with different characters, in different places, and the impact of the events is different.

Aw.

You know with "Afterlife" and the family focus of the movie the franchise has shifted from what it was in 1984. In the beginning it was exterminators who smoked and fought ghosts for a paycheck.

Now with Jason directing the last movie and Spenglers family and Harold Ramis's passing it's grown into something else.

There's a family legacy and friendship behind it now.

You said it better than I could. Ivan watched his son Jason grow up into a director who can carry on the Ghostbusters tradition.

It's very sad and unexpected news. My sympathies to his family and friends.
He made some of the most memorable and funny movies that are so rewatchable.
i read he was supposed to start directing 'Triplets' the sequel to 'Twins' at the start of this year.

I didn't realize that Ivan Reitman was actually the 'stand-in' for Harold Ramis's Egon in those scenes and then they used CG effects. I obviously knew they used a stand-in and put the CGI on, I had no idea it was actually Ivan Reitman doing it though.

He’s not always the stand in. There was an actor for most of it. But part of it… I think when Phoebe is being guided… then it’s Ivan.

Didn't care for the rehash of the first movie's big baddie plot.

Loved the mini Stay Pufts.

A contradiction, I know.

Ray tells Phoebe that Egon took the Ecto-1 and all their proton packs when he fucked off and left to Oklahoma. If he took all the packs, how did Ray, Peter and Winston have their packs when they showed up out of nowhere at the end?

Ray specifically says he took the Ecto 1, his pack, 16oz of Fuel isotope, and all the traps. Then he says "he cleaned us out" which is why everyone thinks he took all the packs, which he didn't.

boy, they took their time getting out that honest trailer

All he left us was some gas, a half pack of cigarettes and sunglasses.

sorry, that always pops in my head when I see a list like that, especially if it's Dan Aykroyd.

Not directly related to Afterlife but stumbled on a video on Youtube with a lot of alternate scenes, casting videos and so on from the Ghostbusters Ultimate Collection. Just for fun:

I liked it. It was a bit of a Force Awakens: pure nostalgiafest to compensate for an earlier disappointment.

He clearly took more than just his pack: there were 3 or 4 used in his Gozer trap.

He built those if you look at them and take into account the dialogue. They aren’t full packs, they’re kind of built onto things. (In exactly the way the gunners seat has a built in pack. And we see he has the parts in his underground lab/bunker from when Phoebe fix’s his actual pack. Foreshadowing!!) That’s why he took all the isotopes and traps… he had figured out what he likely needed, and when no one came with him, he just up and went and did it.)
