Yes, it does repeat some elements of the first one, but everything leading up to that is different, and even the stuff that repeats still plays out with different characters, in different places, and the impact of the events is different. No, the last 40 minutes of the movie--down to the Gatekeeper and the Keymaster getting busy with one another and the shots at the new Gozer temple coinciding with exact replications of shots from the first movie, all the way down to the way they transform into Terror Dogs, plus the exact same music cues? That does.

Aw.
You know with "Afterlife" and the family focus of the movie the franchise has shifted from what it was in 1984. In the beginning it was exterminators who smoked and fought ghosts for a paycheck.
Now with Jason directing the last movie and Spenglers family and Harold Ramis's passing it's grown into something else.
There's a family legacy and friendship behind it now.
I didn't realize that Ivan Reitman was actually the 'stand-in' for Harold Ramis's Egon in those scenes and then they used CG effects. I obviously knew they used a stand-in and put the CGI on, I had no idea it was actually Ivan Reitman doing it though.
Ray tells Phoebe that Egon took the Ecto-1 and all their proton packs when he fucked off and left to Oklahoma. If he took all the packs, how did Ray, Peter and Winston have their packs when they showed up out of nowhere at the end?
All he left us was some gas, a half pack of cigarettes and sunglasses.Ray specifically says he took the Ecto 1, his pack, 16oz of Fuel isotope, and all the traps. Then he says "he cleaned us out" which is why everyone thinks he took all the packs, which he didn't.

I liked it: it was a bit of a Force Awakens: pure nostalgiafest to compensate for an earlier disappointment.
He clearly took more than just his pack: there were 3 or 4 used in his Gozer trap.
