Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

In 2017 Musk was weird, but not the toxic dumpster fire of Nazi salutes he is now. I can understand why they'd name drop Elon in 2017 and at the time, yeah, it seemed like he might chart a path to cheaper and easier interplanetary space exploration. I don't think there's any problem with the perceived science, it just looks bad through the lens of the 2020s and how utterly awful he's become in the past few years.

I don't fault the writers' room at all nor their perception of science. How were they supposed to know that Elon Musk would become an Alt-Right autocracy enabler just a handful of years later? Trek in 1967 and 1986 referenced Leningrad. Leningrad no longer exists with that name. Are the TOS and TVH writers' rooms also at fault and need to be lambasted for having a poor grasp of geography? You write what you know at the time.

They also stuck him in The Big Bang Theory and Iron Man 2. It's just one of those things.

Yeah, still not getting it. What “types” are you referring to? Understanding “science “ has never been a top priority of any Trek writer’s room. Even when actual scientists turned writers were involved. So Musk isn’t quite the guy people thought he was when Disco (or Iron Man II for that matter) were written. That’s hardly the fault of the writers.
Because only stupid people who think they're smart would have bought Musk's nonsense. Musk's popularity comes from the type of brain dead people into pop science.

That's not a "mutiny" in any sense of the word.

Kirk was never "ordered" to NOT steal the Enterprise.
He was told he couldn't go back because the USS Enterprise was being decommissioned and the Federation Council was debating what to do next about the 'Genesis' situation and waiting for the report from a "Science Team". (that never got there)

Ya might want to actually learn the meaning of the word you're tossing around beforehand, because the only one "playing ignorant here" is you.

Look up the definition. It fits perfectly. So, try again.

Yeah, I've looked up the definition of mutiny and can't really understand the piling on against another commentator.

Which nonsense would that be? His companies developed and marketed a popular EV and are at the forefront of commercial space flight. Those are probably the things that led SF entertainment to name drop him.

I’m not a fan of the guy, never have been. He’s always rubbed me the wrong way. But you seem to be grasping and straws here. Blinded by your need to disparage DISCO.

Which guy? I never referred to anyone. Just the writers room. Don't one of the characters say it at one point?

Elon Musk is “the guy”, how is that not clear?

Mention Musk? Well, yeah. Kind of the point of this conversation.

Elon Musk is a Nazi. He's a scam artist who appeals to a particular crowd who have no understanding beyond "I FUCKING LOVE SCIENCE" type shtick..

Ergo, Discovery putting him in is badly dated.

Now you’re just repeating yourself.

Didn't seem to get through the first time.

I'm sure they're cooking up some "Sam Altman is LE EPIC" in Starfleet Academy, or whatever rich, morally bankrupt venture capitalist is the flavour of the month.

It was a weak argument and I think I demonstrated why.

Altman is hardly the media darling Musk was a decade ago.

Once again you’re grasping at straws.

Since I have a P+ subscription for a few more weeks, I felt like watching episode 1 of this show. Bearing in mind, I haven't seen this for over 7 years, so I'm basically approaching it with fresh eyes.

Already, it's going really well. There's a really good bridge crew on board the Shenzhou, and had this show followed them for several seasons, I think the chemistry would've changed a few hearts.
Captain Georgiou is a really good Captain, and Burnham works well as a loose cannon third officer. Saru is a little bit underdeveloped, like Data in the early seasons of TNG, but he's already very interesting.

Also, there's something about Shenzhou sickbay that reminds me of the one onboard the NX-01. I didn't notice it before. It's a good ship, I've almost forgotten how minimalist the bridge looks compared to Discovery.
