Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

Could also be a Medical department collar design, though in most incarnations of Trek the uniforms are the same as those of other departments.

Something about the uniforms that's been bugging me a little, and I realize the in-universe answer is probably "programmable matter", but why do these uniforms unzip differently? Culber's keeps the insignia together, Reno's does not.

I think Reno's is the only one that does this. Maybe she just likes being different (ie: difficult)?

You guys are awesome. I never even noticed the zippers or that they were doing it. Sometimes I wish I had that eye for minutiae.

Different departments have different needs. Have a medical one with a collar that secures across the neck would prevent exposure across in the event of fluids. Many lap coats nowadays have a neck closure to manage exposure.

With the positive reception of season 5 of Discovery, Strange New Worlds will now dedicate an entire season to the aliens that Archer pissed off when Porthos pissed on their lawn, and Lower Decks will dedicate an entire season to why breaking warp 10 turns you into a salamander.

Apples and isolinear chips?

Yeah

TBF even 24th century uniforms were shown to have truly invisible fasteners; they even made alterations to the pullover of the two-piece hero uniform Michelle Forbes was wearing in Ensign Ro so that she could open it on the front, take it off and give it to a refugee girl instead of having to pull it over her head. No wonder 32nd century uniforms could be opened wherever the wearer wants them to.

There's also the possibility that Culber's is like that because he's the CMO, and gets a special variant. Sort of like how we saw McCoy wear his short sleeve uniform much more often on the Enterprise than the regular one. Or how Kirk has his wraparound variant, or Picard got his variant starting with season 5's "Darmok". Picard and Sisko also seem to get an extra vest underneath their uniform with the FIRST CONTACT/later DS9 uniforms.

Raynor's jacket, when unzipped, also kept the collar insignia in one piece on the right like Culber's, and IIRC we've seen Burnham's (and maybe others) do the same. The outlier seems to be Reno's split insignia so she can keep the zip down a little.

A reminder that we’re continuing our Trek/sci-fi/everything zoom discussions this Saturday, from 9-11 PM BST (that’s 4-6 PM EDT in the US), link posted in the thread in the General Trek forum at the time of the event. All are welcome, nothing is recorded, and you can come and go as you please. It’s a pretty good mix of people from many parts of the world with diverse opinions. Come check it out!

OK, I´m probably reaching for connections but the name of L´ak reminds of certain Asari. Also, it is improbable butI´ m starting to think that him being of unknown species might mean he is somehow more directly connected to Progenitors so there will be giant twist he was just chasing his rightful heritage all along.

I thought Pollard was CMO.

Yeah, Culber isn't CMO.

According to memory-alpha, Episode 5 released early in Argentina last week. A local TV provider put it up in the place of Episode 3
