General Computer Thread

I guess people still do.. :p

But just wair when the next series of Threadrippers come out, bet they'll give Intel a thrashing..

I've upgraded my computer this week. I've been saving up and when a Memorial Day sale came along (ugh), I saw some really rock bottom prices on Ryzen processors. Got a Ryzen 5 2600, Gigabyte AM4 motherboard, and a whole heap of RAM all in one go. Then, a week ago, I was on ebay and managed to win a bid on a used Radeon RX580 for dirt cheap. I've never had that kind of skill in timing before, but it worked out, and now that makes my current configuration as follows:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3.4Ghz Processor
Gigabyte B450M DS3H Motherboard
32 GB G.Skill DDR4 2700
4 TB 7200 RPM HDD
12X DVD-RW/CD-RW/Blu-Ray Drive
24X DVD-RW/CD-RW Burner
MSI AMD Radeon RX580 (8 GB VRAM)
Sceptre 24" 75Hz ultra-Slim LED Monitor
Shark 650w Power Supply
Windows 10 Professional (64bit)
VicTsing Rainbow Keyboard and Mouse (wired)

Oh, and for the record, I don't recommend the VicTsing Rainbow light up keyboard. The mouse is great, but the keyboard keys rub off easily. I've had this one for 6 months, and even with proper care, I can no longer read the A, H, Shift, and the S button is starting to go, too. I didn't pay much for it, comparatively, but other keyboards of the same value don't do this, and so I have to chalk it up to either poor quality, or just a lemon. It's outside the warranty, too. I'll keep using it until I can't properly type (I don't need to see the keys most of the time to type, but at night it sure does help), but it's just disappointing.

That one will last you a while. :mallory:
Yes indeed! I have parts leftover from the upgrade, and I'm going to build another tower, and find someone who needs a good computer and give it to them. I figure I should pass on my good fortune to others.

I am so pleased with the upgrade. First thing I did was run a bunch of benchmarks (because that's the kind of nerd I am). This is so much more powerful than I thought it was. I mean, the FX-6300 is powerful, there's no question about that, but the 2nd Gen Ryzen 5 is light on power, efficient as hell, and runs whisper quiet. When I would run video editing software, my FX-6300 would handle it fine, but you could hear the fan spinning up, and the small roar of a jet engine while rendering.

The Ryzen? Doesn't even blink. Quiet as a mouse. I am truly impressed.

I've got a 2200G as my desktop machine now and it is a LOT faster than the Athlon 5350, runs Linux Mint 19.1 on the 5.0.x.x kernel, for a general purpose desktop that chip is really awesome, the on chip graphics card too, it chews up everything I throw at it without the slightest problem.
I'm using the stock Wraith Stealth cooler that came with it and it is quiet enough although in that respect the old Athlon wins since it has a passive heatsink. ;)

My game machine will get an update as well and I am going for a Ryzen 2600X as well, or maybe a 2700X depending how much prices are going to fall after the 3000 series comes out.

Yep, stock Wraith cooler here, too. Nice and quiet! The Ryzen 5 2600 is just ridiculous. I paid the same price for the motherboard and processor what it costs right now just for the CPU itself. I hope you snag a great deal on that 2600X! It looks a bit pricier than what I got, but I'm sure the performance upgrade is worth it.

What's equal to an AMD FX6300 in Ryzen, upgrade time may happen at the end of the year.
If you're upgrading from an FX chip to a Ryzen, you'll need an AM4 motherboard, and DDR4 RAM, too, so keep that in mind. The next step up from an FX-6300 would be a Ryzen 3 1200, but for a little more you can get a Ryzen 3 2200G, which is a sizable step up in performance.

No problem I'm aware I'll need a new board and ram but this one's been going since 2015 with 32gig DDR3 and an FX 6300 with a Radeon R9 380 4gig. I assume I can keep my video card and hard disks and not change windows too much.

Changing the motherboard will cause Windows 10 to become deactivated because a new motherboard usually means a new computer (according to Microsoft). This is easily solved by retyping the original Win10 serial key on the activation page. Aside from that, yeah, you can keep everything else.

Serial key, to quote Sam Beckett "oh boy"

My windows was a digital download when it was free. This is gonna be fun. The digital download version doesn't give you a key but activates via a digital license.

This freeware program will find your Windows 10 product key, in whatever form it exists:

Cool. Will look.

EDIT:
Just tried this out and it works on my version of windows.

Oddly I never had to enter a key at all when I first installed Windows way back when, this has been the same Windows since the free download back when they released it, only it's had tons and tons of updates since then. I am on my 2nd motherboard and never had an issue when I changed to the board I am using now. In my system properties it said I had activated windows via a digital entitlement. The wording has since changed on that screen with the latest update though. It just says it's activated with a number in blue.

Anyway it's handy now that I have a proper key. Thanks.

You don't need a 2200G or 2400G, these have on chip graphics cards, you already have a discrete card, the equivalent would be a Ryzen 1300X which runs at the same speed as the 2200G 3.5Ghz, 3.7 turbo, if possible you coud maybe find a bargain on the 1500X or even 1600X, but I would wait after the 7th of July when the 3000 series comes out.

My friend suggested I buy a corsair case. It's a nice compact case. My motherboard only had 1 four pin connector so at first I could only plug one fan.

I took out the two front fans from my old tower that had a molex connector and it worked out pretty well

From what I can see it seems to be a case made for watercooling and less for air cooling, and with that glass all around you should at least install everything with blinky RGB in 12 gazillion colours.. :p

Fans with molex connectors are fine, you just can't change the RPM unless you get have a fan controller.

The case looks a bit empty with only an M-ITX board in it.

and the less said about the pox that is the trend for cases, memory modules etc the better.

I’m done with MS office. I have 2013, and this week it became deactivated. I tried reauthorizing it only for it to tell me the key was invalid. I tried to activate by phone and was told the software was not supported by phone activation, but they would help me sign up for Office 365, lulz.

I’m back with LibreOffice. At least they don’t randomly pull the rug out from under me and ask for activation keys on software I purchased legitimately.
