General Computer Thread

I just switched away from a Mac (not so much by choice, really), and I said to myself that at least Windows 10 is pretty stable. Of course Microsoft would go and prove me wrong out of spite.
Ah. Dang. I hope that everyone's PC here doesn't get screwed by this. This is one big f'up by them.

It seems that they caught it quickly enough, and only the people who were forcing the updates had wiped drives, but yeah, that's one hell of an oversight!

This is NOT good. Microsoft's new October update can cause people to lose their data! I'm so glad I added that batch file to my laptop earlier this year. Still backing up my laptop this weekend though to be on the safe side.

Yikes!!!!!!!!

Ms are good and screwing stuff up

@Santaman

I bought a new enclosure for the SSD I was having problems with and it works now. In fact both SSDs that I have used before in the problem enclosure work with the new one so I think it was the controller inside the other enclosure that was the issue, also it was an infineon controller. I believe those had issues a while back.

Yep and the thing is, people have been letting them know about this issue for months now (via the arstechnica article) and they still let this update through. It never should have gone out.

"Hey Bob, got that problem fixed where the icon won't display properly!"
"Great Tim, let's test it out!" *click*
*hard drive wipe commences*
"Sweet, no more icon display error! Send it on out to beta."

@Tetra glad it works now.

As for $pycro$oft.. that is why I still haven't moved my game machine to M$ Spyware 10 and why I built a low power desktop machine with Linux Mint for all my desktop needs..
M$ lost my trust and they're sure as hell not getting it back, closing quality assurance and using the userbase as guinea pigs for their alpha version OS plainly sucks, I won't have any of that nonsense.
Worst is that it is the same shit all over, 1709, 1803 both were unfinished beta versions when M$ dished them out, the issues with them haven't been fixed but instead of concentrating on making at least one of them stable and usuable they barf out another clusterfuck..

I usually keep an eye on this site https://www.askwoody.com/ it usually lets people know if it is safe to do any update including the monthly mess ups.. I mean rollups..

MS make new things and break existing things.

I have to say though they did stop this update even if a little late for some. But not before a big noise was made. This should not be the way to do things. I wonder if Mac users have such problems with updates?

F'up is the least possible word for what it is:(

I know mine hasn't tried yet, so I'm just running another clone on my laptop. I should probably do so on my DT too, but that's going to be more long winded as to be on the safe side, I'd want to clone every drive in it.

Macs do have this trouble, yes. I’ve seen updates break Ethernet, there was one update that prevented the OS from booting. Cupertino isn’t the polished city on the hill it once was.

Word. They've reached that point with me in terms of 1803. 1709 ended up being ok on mine (at least by the time it made it to it). Thankfully. Exactly. I don't get why they keep on doing that bs over and over again and don't try to work on making something STABLE.

Yea that site is pretty good.

Definitely. :( I have so much on my laptop that I don't want to lose. Stuff I can't get again (meaning avatars and the like).

Was just thinking... now I'm wondering if those idiots were trying to get that new update onto my laptop recently. I had my laptop freeze and I had to hard reboot, and I checked and saw the same issue I've had before where they tried to get past the batch file I have that blocks updates.

Scary to see a major corporation put out an update like this for something millions of people rely on, even when there were many bug reports indicating the problem. I'm only on 1803 myself, so thankfully that means I likely won't be affected and will receive the fixed update.

From what I've read, it sounds like it's a bug regarding OneDrive. But if that's the case, if someone hasn't activated an account, I wonder if they'd still be affected?

Shitty situation. It doesn't exactly put good faith in OneDrive, or Microsoft for that matter.

Good question. Read about the One Drive thing. Hate that thing. It ends up affecting my Wifi when it tries to sync.

Got an update on it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/comments/9mdnw1/since_many_users_reported_losing_their_files/

Since many users reported losing their files, Microsoft has released support to help you recover it. They say the files are there; they've just been rendered unreadable by the OS. Plus, they've advised affected users to minimise use of the affected device to prevent overwriting of the affected files

It's really f'd up. Minimize use? Well that's not good or practical for people who rely on their computers for work and such.

Yeah, I heard the part of them being still there with MS being able to help recover them. Still doesn't help the fact that those who've lost their files have been unable to roll back due to drives becoming corrupt. It's a cruel joke. I really hope they have egg on their faces from this. If there's a lesson MS should learn from this, it's to listen to their bug reports from months ago because there might be some merit in them.

Word. Those people are screwed over by Microcrap big time. Definitely. I hope this bites M$ in the butt big time. Exactly. But do we think they'll learn from it? That's the thing. It seems as if they don't.

Too little too late for most that have been affected, in other words. And it really feels like MS aren't doing quite enough. Why don't they release this so-called tool publicly? Get it into the hands of those who've been affected. Thing is, I worry for those who don't exactly follow tech news like this and who are oblivious to the problem. What then? It's not like they would know to ask for an undelete tool. MS needs to be far more proactive, especially given that it seems to be a bug in the internal logic as far as OneDrive is concerned. Willing to bet it's all down to the difference between a comma that was left out in the code. Something in an uninstall script somewhere during the installation maybe. But if that's the case, it's even more unforgiveable seeing as it's a User path that is part of Windows' structure that doesn't change aside from the username being a wildcard.

Reminds me of a bug in an older game, I think it was from Bungie, that when going through the uninstallation, would wipe out the C:/ drive. OOPS?? https://minimaxir.com/2013/06/working-as-intended/

It reminds me back when Apple was having trouble with the iPhone's call reception, and their answer to people was "we didn't make a mistake, you're just holding it wrong." Tech companies don't like to admit when they screw up. In Microsoft's case, the best thing they can do is release the tool that will help people recover their files, and then apologize. Openly admit they screwed up. Satya Nadella's been doing a great job of making Microsoft relevant and leading edge again, but that also requires acknowledging screw ups. This is a pretty big one.

Yep. Companies love to blame their customers for their own screw ups.
