General Computer Thread

Linux Mint 19 Beta has been released a while ago, this means that Mint 19 (non beta) will be released soon.
Should be interesting, no more swap partition but a swap file and the option to encrypt the entire drive instead of only the home directory.

Oooh....... I have 18.3 so is upgradingin Linux the same as in Windows or do I do a new fresh install? My Asus with the 32gig EMMC has Linux 18.3 on it

Point releases you can just install with the update manager, so from 18.1 to 18.2 or 18.3 it will do without any hiccups, from 18.3 to 19 is a little more complicated but there's a tutorial, however, 18.3 will be supported until 2021 so why change a working setup but I recommend going with a clean install if you do want to jump to 19, also because it will mean that you have to backup all your data which is a good thing..

OK cool.

The thing I noticed on this particular machine is it seems faster on Linux then it did on Windows 10.

The main issue with that was the small built in storage. 32gig which with Windows installed leaves you with 7.5 gig to play with and if updates roll in that goes down to almost zero and the machine becomes sluggish and useless. I have no idea who thought that was good design.

MS seemingly couldn't give a shit about machines with small amounts of storage. I doubt they even test on any.

I don't blame MS for that I blame companies like ASUS seriously the machine retails here for $489 for that same price you can get a 15"5 inch laptop with a proper hard disk of 500gig. Yet they think 32gig is good. Good thing it was a birthday gift. I would not have paid that much for that.

MS should test that upgrades work on small storage footprint machines if they're going to take your money to licence their piece-of-shit(TM) OS on them. But no, they can't be arsed.

Not something anyone should be happy about.. Gosh, maybe now Spycro$oft might think about creating a working, stable OS they not replace with another alpha version every half year..

BWAHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHHAAA!!!!!! of course not...

Oh come on now stop sounding sensible and logical.

Oh this is rich.

I recommend you block it until the next cumulative update is released. Many are reporting the same problem too and it looks like this update is buggy.

Is there an option or work around to block updates or hardware drivers that might cause problems?
Yes, Microsoft has released a KB update (KB3073930) that will let users block or hide Windows or driver updates.

You can download it at the following link:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

or

http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/2/2/f2...

After downloading, launch it, click Next, wait while it detects pending Windows Updates.

Click the Hide Updates menu.

Scroll through the list then select then select the update. Check the box next to the update then click Next to confirm changes.

Yeah a feature no one asked for.

BTW I can't display reddit pages.

I get this message instead

When loading up reddits homepage. Seems to be a browser issue with the latest update of chrome and firefox
Something that actually blocks updates. I'm surprised they even came up with one.

Too bad it probably doesn't work all that well. The one I'm using has stopped updates so far, but Windows update program is still trying. Harassing my poor laptop.

I'm toying with the idea of removing wifi from my laptop and installing windows 7, and just using it for non internet related stuff. I wouldn't need for it to go online so I'm wondering if that will be safe.

As it it its a nice machine on Windows 10 but I don't really need the internet when I have a nice desktop PC for all that.

Also my battery tends to die very fast when using Edge or Firefox. Nice how a web browser can kill your battery like that. If I'm not online it tends to go longer and I get almost the full 5 hours they claim in the manual, maybe slightly more. So yeah toying with the idea.
