General Computer Thread

Mine went through the regular update service. It of course took a while to download the big update and Windows isn't itself very forthcoming with what it is installing so I only knew my windows version had changed when the icons on my desktop had gone back to super small in line with my screen resolution. I was looking around to see what had caused that as the updates don't really say "hey this is a new version of windows" Only that it is a cumulative update.
Ah I see. Not thrilled that it's a big one. Given that I have around 105gb left.

The thing is with this update if you right click your OS drive and choose disk tools, choose the cleanup system files option then you get a box which asks you if you want to delete the previous windows version, in a roundabout way that's precisely how I knew mine had changed because I do a disk cleanup often. In any case after a few weeks the previous version will be deleted anyway I think. So that will free up space again, plus when you do that you get the option to delete other things you may not need.

I need some advice. I use a MacBook Pro and typically Safari as my browser, and it's generally been pretty reliable. Today I noticed at one point it went from running fine to being * very * slow to load, and the problem has persisted over several sessions even though I've tried dumping caches and I always clear my history each session. The thing is, it seems to be very random as to when it actually occurs. Chrome doesn't seem to have the same lag, and I'd still prefer to keep using Safari regularly. I've seen a couple of links mentioning this issue but I don't know what to try, if anything.

I'm out of practice on the Mac, but am I correct that Safari doesn't support much if any in the way of pluggins which can be the first cause of browser going slow?

What about memory usage? Is it or anything else chew more memory than usual? Not sure if there's any command to give this information outside of using "top" in a terminal session.

Though I guess the biggest question - has Apple updated Safari at all recent (or updates for OS X in general?).

Nearly threes on and I've not experienced and major issues with Win10.

I do need to give the insides of my PC a good dust though.

I've routinely updated Safari as needed, so Apple does regularly support it. It seems to be working fine at the moment so I'll monitor it today and see what happens. I have Chrome as well but have generally never needed to use it much. Yesterday was weird because it came out of the blue when I was two-thirds into my day, and the problem didn't seem to be solved by a cache dump. Perhaps a full reboot was needed and I didn't have time to test that before work, but I'll see what happens today. :)

As far as memory usage, I can't think of anything that would cause that problem off the top of my head. I rarely run a bunch of stuff at once or have a huge amount of tabs open. Safari does have an option for extensions and plug-ins but I generally haven't needed many of those either.

I have 1803 installed and Avast and haven't had any issues, but then again, I have the paid for subscription and not the free version, so that could be part of it.

My Dad uses the freebie version and didn't have any issues either.
(On the other hand, my DT, also with avast has had a minor hiccup with it and rolled back, but I'll have a look at it some other time. The error message rings a bell as I had the same one with Win7 a few times)

Windows does it again?

I haven't used my laptop in over a week, turn it on to discover the batteries are at absolute zero. Anyway plugged in and turn on now windows on my laptop can't verify my account.

The message I keep getting is "keyset does not exist" when I click "verify" in the user accounts page in settings.

Also "device doesn't understand command" when the "fix account" button is clicked.

I have no idea.. a quick google fu didn't yield anything beyond some certification error and something related to the Cryptographic Service Provider.

I fixed it.

Used the Windows Accounts troubleshooter and that seemed to fix my issue. It wasn't communicating with the sync service or something and I logged out of my account to a local account, logged back in and now the laptop is working the way it is supposed to work.

Deleted the local account and all is back to normal.

It was a strange one and all the answers I got from Google also were related to cryptographic services. But for now fixed.

Had to mess with a Win 10 machine on Thursday, ye gads who designed that abomination they dare to call user interface? :wtf::crazy::klingon:

Well, my laptop has just gone 1803 (rebooting while it updated the files etc took about fifty minutes all told). No issues yet, but I'll have a play and see. (I did do a full clone before hand though, just to be on the safe side)

And they wonder why there are a billion and a half UI replacement programs around, should be enough of a hint to tell Spycro$oft that they're doing it wrong..

My machine is still blocking 1803 so far thanks to that batch file a member in the Windows 10 reddit forums had set up.
