General Computer Thread

Yes. On some versions of Linux, you can also switch to a console window by entering the triple key combination [Ctl][Alt][F#] where # is an integer between 1 and 6 -- entering a 7 takes you back to the graphical session.

But just think how much could be found if some-one simply used google for 30 seconds.

LOL.. yeah.. I remember the Google less days.. and having to use a download manager because usually halfway an important download yer mom wanted to use the phone.. *CLICK* carrier lost..

oh well.

at least there is google. I started using FreeBSD back in 1994 there was no google.

Then again it and Linux could be installed off 1.44MB floppies and downloaded with a 28.8k modem :)
I can't quite recall what was the first search engine I used was. I think it might have been Altavista back in 94. I was introduced to it at work and thought "Perhaps I can have a brain the size of a planet." The WWW back then could possibly have fit on a modern large hard drive - perhaps for a short while.

reading the wiki page on web search engines that probably would have been about the time altavista launched though the probably weren't that many websites (usenet was still king). Speaking of usenet, it seems it's still around and a big part of is getting stuff that is often obtained by tormenting (come a long way from uudecoding porn for sure).

The first search engine I used was indeed Altavista, I only could get online at the library, they had computers there with internet access, Mosaic was the browser on those.. they ran Win 3.11 for workgroups back then..

Dont' remember which was the first search engine I used. Can remember using yahoo but not if there was anything earlier.

I do remember Windwos for Workgroups though :)

Ask Jeeves is still around I believe as is Bing. One reason why Alexa gives such shallow answers is down to its use of Bing. Much more satisfyingly deep answers are to be obtained from Google Home.

Did you see the story about Amazon Echo users who find their devices randomly laugh. Is this the great AI uprising starting? :D

Knew that bing was used by Microsoft's Cortana but didn't know it was used by Alexa but despite my IT interests I make zero use of any sort of voice search system.

Mine do strange things as well like suddenly spouting off information that I haven't requested. Makes me wonder if the Echoes or the back-end servers have been hacked.

Alexa also uses Wikipedia but it seems to be limited to the first paragraph or so. Voice search is handy sometimes if I can't be bothered to use my mobile or boot up a PC.

Hey @Asbo Zaprudder I fixed my linux issue.

I fixed my issue with Linux, just took a reinstall which took all of around 16 minutes.

Also a curious thing, during install there is a list of checks you can click on to ask for password at boot or boot automatically. This is where I think I screwed up. I clicked boot automatically but didn't enter any information in the two password boxes... The install did proceed but now I'm curious as it still thought I had issued a password, as things like the driver manager kept asking for one. So I'm wondering if there was a default generic password that they installed that first time around.

It's all working now though with a proper password.

Yeah, I don't know what it would use as a password if you didn't enter one. To my way of thinking it should have refused to proceed with installation until passwords were entered and confirmed. Some Linux installs such as Fedora even refuse to accept simple passwords unless you confirm that is really what you want.

I know.... But the first time around it just did the install with no entry for password so that's why I was stuck, but now all is well and I won't fiddle around with it too much. I've killed versions of Windows and Linux before from messing about.

BTW this particular laptop is also touch screen and all the menus work fine with that.

Sorry to sound silly but which program do I use to find new stuff to download? I'm looking to see if there's a linux version of Irafanview which is my favourite image tool at the moment, and the one I'm most familiar with..

So far so good.
