Game Of Thrones Season 5 TV Only Discussion (Spoilers)

This was the strongest episode this season, IMHO.

As a personal observation, it was nice to see Stella McCusker as the Stark-loyalist serving lady. Like a lot of the other local actors, she's a regular, long-time stalwart of the Lyric theatre. Very encouraging and helpful to young people and wannabe actors. Totally mad as a box of frogs though - I saw her in my local shopping centre a few years ago carrying on a vigorous discussion with herself, complete with animated hand gestures and facial expressions! Ah, thespians!

Good episode, I like that it mostly just focused on three areas- the wall, Winterfell and Dany, some episodes can end up all over the place.
But I think I might start avoiding the title sequence from now, always a bit disappointed when Maisie Williams' name doesn't appear= no Arya Stark this week :(

I'm trying to recall, is this only the third episode of the show to not have any King's Landing scenes in it? The other two that come to mind are S1E2 "The Kingsroad" and of course S4E9 "The Watchers on the Wall".

I think it is very interesting that Theon, the person in the single worst position in this story has now realized he has knowledge that no one else has. I will be interested to see if he chooses to use it.

(accidentally posted this in the other thread, bad me)

What do you mean? That Bran is still alive?

I don't know about book Theon/Reek but in this show he is pretty far gone and i doubt he'll have the courage to defy a monster like Ramsay because GoT doesn't strike me as the show where people get redeemed at the last second so they can get out or die heroically.

That both of the boys are alive, yes. I think you see it in his eyes during the scene where he is made to apologize to Sansa for killing them. If there's any point at which he can reclaim a shred of himself again it will be through revealing that information.

During the meal with the Boltons, I was half expecting Sansa to interrupt Ramsey with a very pointed "If you don't shut up I'll jab a fork in your eye" or something. I know she wouldn't/couldn't, but it would have been good for a chuckle.:)
 It might actually give Ramsay pause for once. But Littlefinger's right. Sansa has learned the art of deception, literally from the best. Her very telling smile at Ramsay's insecurity about being a former bastard is a bright, red, candy-like button that she can push to manipulate him. Roose won't very well allow Ramsay to go all medieval on her like he has with other people, considering she's their key to the North right now, so she should be relatively safe and given enough room to maneuver with them.

Theon fessed up to this last season in the Ramsay "shaving" scene with Roose in the room. Significant information, yes, but all three of them are aware of this now and are keeping it under tight wraps, lest it undermine their position in the North. But yes, I do think that Theon will tell Sansa this at some point.

She was also smart enough to be weary of Myranda, Season 3 or 4 Sansa might have still latched on to Myranda's feigned friendliness, as she did with Margaery, but now she seems to be smarter than that.

Just got to watch the episode, I liked it a lot overall. However I was a bit disappointed in Daenerys not being more angry over Selmys death. If she was straight out angry, you could understand her initial reaction and what she did.

She was still dumb enough to walk unescorted to the end of a dark kennel. She's lucky she's protected by plot armor!

I gather she's still trying balance being a benevolent ruler vs being misinterpreted as weak and overcompensating. She's still a very young girl - shit, in the books she's only around 14 at this point! Selmy was a great balancing force of wisdom in her life - she will miss that in many ways.

I think she's trying to also keep her Targaryen "legacy" of sanity in check. She may have a little bit of her father in her - "Mad King Aeres", alluding to the old adage, "Every time a Targaryen is born, the gods flip a coin". She could be wrestling with that a little bit, trying to keep "the dragon" in check. Viserys was clearly more unhinged before Drogo gave him his "crown of gold", but Dany may be dealing with some personal issues as well, albeit more subdued.

Oh totally forgot about that

Well yeah, he can tell Sansa.

Theon told Ramsay the Stark boys weren't dead before he even started torturing him. That's why Roose sent Locke to the Wall.

Those Sansa scenes were brutal. As she quickly internalizes the fact she's once again at the mercy of the only man in Westeross MORE of a psychopath than Joffrey.

I loved the way Cersei was copying Tiwyn's tactic of writing something during a meeting with somebody.

What else have I seen the actor who played the head slaver in? I know it's something I watched a lot, but not that recently. The actor is not in the credits in Wikipedia or IMDB for this episode, and this is driving me nuts.

Yeah, he was Mr. Eko on Lost.

Was this the first time the show referred to Olenna Tyrell as the Queen of Thorns? I don't recall.

Poor Sansa. Oh well, hey if they follow the Season 1 Daenerys way, next week she'll suddenly be in love with the guy who raped her, and be asking tips from Myranda in the bath on how to please him!
