Digging in Jersey City and the only thing of interest they discovered was a football and ancient technology?

I *really* liked this episode. It wasn't flawless. It wasn't even as emotionally gripping as "Peter" or "August." Or as riveting as "Olivia." But the revelations were just so much damn fun to watch, that I kinda have to give this one an Excellent.

Above Average - Not as good as I was hoping for. The 'first people' revelation (as many of us have speculated) was very interesting... The rest not quite up to the usual Season 3 standard.

Definitely somewhere between Above Average and Excellent for me. Most of the episode sort of seemed pretty good, but nothing earth shattering until they introduced this new "first people" storyline which bumps up their already very strong Arc over this season and last another notch. What Fringe lacks in stellar acting/writing from all involved, it more than makes up for in their overall arc. Kind of reminds me of Bab 5 where some of the actors weren't amazing and some of the dialog/writing could be sub-par from time to time, but the overall story took the show up a few notches.

This is just a wild guess, but assuming Fringe gets another season or 2:

This season ends with a direct conflict between the two realities. Someone dies from one side (let's say that Fauxlivia sacrifices herself and asks them to consider Peter's "there must be another way" option.) Let's say there's a shot of stabilizing the rift between the two realities, but it could risk damage or destruction to both.

The observers step in at the beginning of Season 4 and introduce themselves as the last products of the first people. They set the two conflicting worlds on a path where they can fix the tears so that both worlds can exist, but there's resistance on both sides and each side has a faction that's trying to preemptively end the other realities existence, thereby ensuring their own survival.

Season 4 ends with the realization that the observers actually sent to sabotage one of the realities and that the ancient device is to be used to serve as a portal for the First People to return from wherever they had to flee to avoid being exterminated by whatever extinction event occurred. The Alt reality is subsumed by the reality that these First People have created and in order to truly stabilize their new existence, they have to shut our reality down so there's no possible threat to them.

Season 5 is our war against the First people who are technologically advanced, but very small in numbers and dealing with less than ideal materials to work with. We win the war at the end of Season 5 with the First People and bring back the alt. reality which restores balance between the two and they learn to live in harmony with each other.

I voted Excellent. Really enjoyed the first people stuff.

Once again we get a hilarious inaccurate bit of science- if these longitude and latitude points are coming from some ancient text from 65 million years ago, all of the continents would have been in different places then. I'm still banking that the Fringe universe is in an alternate universe with different laws of phyics from our own. Yes, that's it. I imagine this will be revealed somewhere around season 7. (Half-joking)

Lots of good little characters bits. I like Folivia's "hypothetical" speech to Peter about what he would do to save his universe.

Could the Observers be the First People?

That's my speculation... But the observers could also some other kind of pan-dimensional beings who are somehow involved in guarding the "first people" legacy - or protecting against them. (See the big observer episode in season 1)

But one thing is clear - The observers appear to be able to shift between universes.

My speculation from a few posts back (that apparently you both missed ) was that the observers were left by the first people to orchestrate a return of the first people when the timing is right. In either case, I definitely agree that the observers are at least connected to the first people.

Cool, Marshall Flinkman! Makes me wonder when Terry O'Quinn gets his recurring role on Fringe. He needs to be on any of J.J. Abrams' SF/Fantasy shows.

And finally we found out who those "first people" (from alternate universe's intro) are.

And yeah, the show found its stride with this season. It really is the best SF show currently in production (if Torchwood managed to maintain the level ofChildren of Earth it would be a tough competitor, but I assume that Espenson is gonna mess up Series 4 :P ).

My wife and i noticed some Lost numbers in this....can anyone verify if they were all used in a sequence?

I saw an 8 and a 15 which were used badly on LOST.

There was also a 42, but I think it was visible as:

15 8 42

so not in order. But I noticed that immediately, too.

This is REALLY shaping up.

Anyone else notice that it was NINA who told Fauxlivia, “That’s not like you, you usually are direct with Walter.” Or words to that effect. Really liking how Nina can relax a bit.

You know, I thought that Peter was a bright guy, but if Scarlie can figure out as quickly as he did that the 'Liv' in the alt-verse didn't seem quite right, you'd think that Peter could see this as well.

So you don't think Olivia saying she's not their Olivia and they're trying to put false memories into her is something Charlie took into consideration after Olivia's shooting spree?

Here's my theory about the "First People": I think they planted pieces of the machine foreseeing the war that was to come between our world and the alternate world. I'm thinking this war may a part of some grand master plan concocted by the "First People" for reasons we don't know yet. This would add a whole new dimension to the war with both sides being played for fools. The "First People" can either be the Observers or a pan-dimensional race the Observers are either working for or working aganist. If all of this true, I would love to see an alliance formed between Fringe Prime and Alt-Fringe aganist the threat of the "First People." Something like a part of the direction label would want the show to take in future seasons.

I would also like to say I'm loving the unraveling of Alt-Olivia. She's giving into her relationship with Peter which may affecting her judgment. She's even concerned about hurting any more innocent people which is different from the cold-blooded mentality she had when she killed the deaf guy in the second episode and she may be giving Peter's "another option" some thought. I can't wait to see the confrontation between Olivia and Alt-Olivia and Alt-Olivia's exposure as an impersonator.

Heh ... How about Fringe being part of the Lost-verse.

I immediately noticed 8 and 42 and I began to (jokingly) wonder if this was going to be a crossover episode. I half-expected to hear a French voice over the transmission...

I didn't even think of this but now that I've seen that most people in this thread have, I feel kind of silly that I didn't. Either way, I loved all of the information we got in this episode, even if it came with more questions.

Good to see I'm not the only person who noticed.

Another great episode. Between the discovery of the location for the machine pieces and our Olivia realizing she needs to leave the alternate universe now, I feel like things are coming together. And to think, we're only halfway through the season.
