flemm, Arnie's Terminator was and is still iconic, the same way that most people in the world remember TOS (and Spock) as Star Trek.

It would require guts to recast; but apparently some casting people do have guts.

Oh they will try, and I'm sure it will eventually happen. But I think any reboot of Terminator will have to rely less on the public's fascination with the title character than was originally the case.

Neck and neck, although I was hoping for 6+ million for Trek.

Although these figures are very preliminary still...

Bale (from the movies I've seen him in) reminds me of Keanu Reeves a bit. Passable, not outstanding.

Considering it's Term's first Friday and it's making less than 3 times what Star Trek is in it's 3rd week, I think these numbers are pretty good. And Angels and Demons is getting a free ride from limited competition in its demographic...and remember that it's only in its second week.

I expect poorer word of mouth about Term will increase Trek's box office on Saturday to surpass A and D.

My understanding was more that it picked up the story following Judgement Day, but I have admittedly not been paying very close attention.

You just know the next time you see a terminator on the big screen it will be a reboot of the series with a real good director and writer behind it. I don't see a part 2 in this McG series ever happening.

you mean, with Arnold's character's back history? hmm, if it's about that it might be actually something I'd pay to watch.

Thats exactly what I mean , of course filling that iconic role will be near impossible. Thats a problem for another day and you won't see this if it happens at all for probably 5-8 years. I could be wrong and there will be a sequel to Salvation..who knows , it will probably do well around the world. T 3 did less then well here for its budget but made big money around the world and I am sure sold a crap load of DVD's. The same will apply for T:S most likely.

It's a reboot, but nobody's raving about it.

It's not a reboot. It's a continuation of the story. Linda Hamilton is in it, Arnie is kinda in it, John is married to the woman he was stuck in the bunker with at the end of T3.

This is as much a reboot as T3 could be called a reboot.

No ones raving about it because of the weak writing and people just don't like McG for one reason or another ( mostly because of his name and Charlies Angels heh ).

This is not a reboot of Terminator, so the comparison is not relevant.

Eventually, the studio will go back to the original scenario, which is a good sci-fi scenario. However, it succeeded largely because at the time the public was fascinated by this charismatic hulking muscleman with the thick Austrian accent, the likes of whom they had never seen before.

To get back to my original point, it will be a casting nightmare to find a personality that will be able to attract that kind of fascination playing an emotionless robotic killing machine, especially with the original actor having transcended the role and become ever more prominent in the public eye. Neither the accent nor the muscles hold any fascination any longer.

The scenario is however a good one, so a reboot could succeed with a more balanced approach.
