    I also agree.

I think people are starting to grow a little tired of all the gloom and doom. I think people's need to escape from all the bad news may also explain some of S.T.'s broad appeal thus far.

Yeah, but replacing Arnie as the Terminator is a casting nightmare that makes casting Spock seem like a walk in the park by comparison.

i think right now people want something at least a little optomistic.
frankly some people are still not happy about how t2 didnt prevent judgement day
after seeing this film i wonder if it is set in a timeline where t2 didnt take place
if the terminator movie had been set in the time period of where they win the final battle and reese goes back i think that would do better.
but some people caught on to the dates and realised they were a long way off from that.

and yeah the trailers just didnt sell it.
if they were smart they would feature kyle , marcus
    and the little girl
    in the trailer.

Yeah...I don't think I agree with that. Both are iconic -- and Spock much longer and more entrenched.

Casting Spock was not a walk in the park; and if that can be done, recasting Arnie can be, too.

It's too bad, he's done far more in his career and should be more acclaimed. His performance in Empire of the Sun was unbelievable and more valuable then all of Tom Cruise's roles combined.

Bale needs a rom-com or just a com. Everything he's in is depressing.

Both are hard. In fact, I would say Spock was very hard. But the Terminator will be even harder in my view for a few reasons, that really don't have anything to do with the character being more iconic (which it is not).

One reason is that Arnie himself is still prominent in the public eye, and that the Terminator character is still associated with him as a public figure (governator). The Terminator franchise has lost all momentum while its star has continued to become more prominent while not losing his association with the character.

Compare this with Spock, who had fallen out of the public eye. Also, the Trek franchise had already gone through a long period of success unrelated to Nimoy or the Spock character.

Also, Arnie's success as this unprecedented combination of strange accent and huge muscles, a sort of action hero caricature is unlikely to be repeated. There have been too many pale imitations since, and with physique-enhancing drugs being what they currently are, the bulging muscles look has been trivialized. In short because of a lot of different factors Arnie was a big draw even though he was playing an emotionless robotic killing machine. It seems unlikley that seeing a muscleman do this will ever have the same fascination for audiences ever again.

A reboot would likely have to rely on the director and overall quality rather than the star in the title role.

flemm, Arnie's Terminator was and is still iconic, the same way that most people in the world remember TOS (and Spock) as Star Trek.

It would require guts to recast; but apparently some casting people do have guts.
