Friday Estimates - Star Trek #4 - $5.8 million - $168 million

Borgminister, I think it was about one-third full. They were having a good time, though; and they made me feel like laughing out loud again myself.

I made a point of checking out the demographics, and there were a good ratio of younger people.

It's not dedication; just craving. I still need it every few days. I don't know if I will make it through until next weekend without seeing it again midweek. I like it; it's a nice experience. My husband is the greatest; he still goes with me. It'll be gone soon enough.

I feel like I have been waiting for this movie since TMP came out -- instead.

I just got back from seeing it a 4th time. The theater was PACKED like it was opening day! My first thought was where the hell am I gonna sit!?

Re: Early Friday Estimates - Star Trek #4 - $6.3 million

Thats not good at all for Terminator, how much did Trek make on its first day? Wasn't it 30m when you factor in the early screenings the day before?

Terminator has nearly $30m by the end of Friday as well. It made over $13m on Thursday, compared to Trek's $4m.

Whether T4 will be a success is anybody's guess. $200m is an obscene amount of money for a movie, especially since T3 had the same budget and didn't get it back domestic. On the other hand, I saw it yesterday and I can say that it's easily better than T3 and that seems to be the general consensus. It's on track to do better than T3 it's opening weekend against tougher competition, so, who knows.

Saw it again this evening with 4 other people. 3 of whom had not seen it yet. The theater was packed full and people were loving it. People were laughing and oohing and awwing at the proper moments. The one moment that caught me by surprise was in the ice cave where they reveal Spock Prime. Up until now there really was no response that i noticed but this time there were a LOT of audible "holy shit"s "Oh my god"s "woahs" and really just a lot of audible intaking of breath when they saw who was onscreen. There seemed to be a lot of people in the audience who have not seen the movie yet and who had not been spoiled on Leonard Nimoy's appearance in the movie. I also heard a lot of excited chatter when people were exiting.

In comparison yesterday was completely morbid while going to see Terminator. Standing in line I watched the audience exit the movie and no one was chatting about it and most of them looked like their dog had just died. Even after watching the movie everyone just filed out of the theater with nobody talking. Don't get me wrong i enjoyed the movie, but i will be waiting until the Blu-Ray release to see it again.

T4 seems to be making a lot of money for people to be exiting as if from a funeral. But always happy for anecdotal evidence of Trek's continued box office draw.

Be interesting to see the weekend figures...

I'm not saying T4 was bad, i rather liked it myself. I just think that Trek has some legs to it. 3 weeks into its run and half the theater is gasping at the fact that Leonard Nimoy is in the film. People are laughing and cheering and having a grand old time. There was a very quiet moment when ***** was destroyed but it did have a few audible responses. The demographics were quite varied as well. I saw a family bring their kids that maybe looked 4 or 5 at the oldest plus there was an elderly couple who looked to be in their 70's or 80's being helped up the stairs to their seats. I had to wonder if they watched Trek in it's original run 43 years ago..and if i would still be watching new Trek 43 years from now.....

With T4 it really was quite tame. People did make noise when a certain song was played and when a certain Terminator model was revealed but that really was about it. People just seem to be having fun when they watch Star Trek.

According to Deadlinehollywood analysts predict the 4-day holiday weekend numbers might look something like this:

1. Night at the Museum 2 - 70 million
2. Terminator 4 - 70-80 million (5 days)
3. Da Vinci Code 2 - 30 million
4. Star Trek XI - 30 million

Just estimates folks. :)

Terminator had a full release on the Wednesday/Thursday didn't it? Trek had limited showings.

Packed to the rafters! Today's 4.00pm Sunday session at IMAX Sydney, the world's biggest rectangular cinema screen - "Star Trek" sold out! Not bad for a movie in its third weekend of release.

I just got back from seeing it a 4th time. The theater was PACKED like it was opening day! My first thought was where the hell am I gonna sit!?

Same thing at my theater. We originally wanted to see T4 and while standing in line we decided to see ST instead. If I had to estimate I would say there were about 15-20 available seats scattered mainly in the front section, next to the screen. And people were still arriving. We had to sit in the fourth row:brickwall:.
The funny thing that happen that made my evening was a comment I overheard while walking to the restroom before the movie. At the door I passed two teenage girs who were entering the theater. One of the girls said "But I thought you didn't like Star Treks." the other one responded "I thought so too.":D

I think that there's a factor in the T4 numbers that isn't being considered compared to Trek. Trek, much like Ep 1 of Star Wars is meant to be a family film. T4 clearly is not. Trek is a light hearted romp with minimal violence. You don't even see Nero actually kill the captain at the beginning. The closest you come to any actual violence in the movie is Sulu running the romulan through with his blade.

T4 is an adults only war film. It's dark... brooding and rather violent. As such, it loses 50% of it's audience to Night at the Museum, which took first place for the weekend.

That's neither good nor bad. I am simply saying that the audience for the two movies is entirely different and, if you're a parent you're likely NOT going to take anybody under the age of 13 to see T4. They may end up seeing it anyway, but it won't be their first inclination.

For the type of movie it is, T4 isn't doing badly and is on pace with T3, which made $44m over it's first 3 days while T4 made $43m.

Keep in mind that T3 cost the same $200m to make and only made about $150m domestic but ended up grossing over $433m worldwide, not adjusted for inflation. Trek will do nowhere near that kind of number overseas and, if T4 follows suit with T3 in overseas popularity will probably end up grossing more at the end of the day. Of course, Arnold may have more popularity overseas than Bale, so, it's hard to say.

I'm simply saying that it's two different franchises with two different audiences. Other than both being considered sci-fi, they have very little in common.

Night at the museum ends up being a bit of a stumper for T4 as, like I said earlier, a lot of younger folks see that instead. If Museum debuts a week or two later, no telling where those viewers go, assuming they don't see more than one film over the weekend.

Terminator had a full release on the Wednesday/Thursday didn't it? Trek had limited showings.

Thursday. Yeah, I believe it was a full day release. But, being a weekday it's reasonable to think that most of their money comes after 6pm, just like on Friday's.

Again, no point to my post other than to say that T4 isn't doing badly and is on pace with T3. The international numbers will be far more telling for T4 as that's where T3 made the bulk of it's money.
