For those of us who don't hate the Nu Enterprise but don't love it

Could JJ and company have designed a Enterprise we all would have loved? Not the TOS enterprise but something a little closer to home than we got? I know there are many fans that love this ship but somehow when i look at her i don't see the beauty of the refit she just looks off to me. do any of you feel the same way?

No, I actually like it a million times better, but I'm sure there are a few who feel the same as you do.

Obviously everyone isn't going to love it, especially when you're dealing with the really obsessive type of Trek fans.

But I really do think it looks sexy and more fluid than the rigid and stiff older version. A very nice update to a classic design.

If they'd downsized the nacelles a little bit, I think I'd like it. As it stands, each one looks more massive than the rest of the ship. Looks kinda weird.

It does stick out like a sore thumb in a starship evolution chart. Something the NX-01 was accused of, looking too advanced. That's not an argument I bought into and could easily imagine the industrial darker hull plating gradually being phased out when Starfleet began experimenting with shield bubbles surrounding their vessels. That technology gets us to a clean looking exterior. The Columbia NX-01 was on that road with a lighter shade hull. Take nacelles, even those on the Phoenix differed little from what we see two centuries on. All of a sudden, we now get hoods over them and dot-dot-dash blue markings near the front. Presumably all accounted for due to the screwed up timeline we'll be seeing soon...

I don't think it's so much the design as the proportions. The secondary hull is too close to the saucer, too forward, and the neck is too short. If you took these pieces, and put them over the original Enterprise design, it would look so much better. See below.

The top images is how the design is in the movie, the bottom is corrected to match the TOS Enterprise proportions.

My two complaints are the size of the front of the nacelles and the thinness of the secondary hull.

However from the fleeting glimpses from the trailers when it is in motion I have liked it.

And it doesn't look like the bussard collectors glow. :(

But that's not necessarily a bad thing...

My thoughts exactly... However, it indeed seems that 'Enterprise' - as the prequel of the franchise - is stylistically closer to nuTrek than it ever was to TOS and everything beyond. That's something that's hard to explain when you want to follow the ENT-TOS chronology...

That's why I'm getting the feeling that the NU-ENTERPRISE will be BIGGER! then the ''Original'' just look at the shuttlebay doors, there ''Half'' the size it ''SHULD'' be:eek:! if this Ent ''was'' the same size as the original I can understand the ''hatetrid'' for this design, but I really belive this 'Ent' Will be bigger then we think.

Based on the discussions (and yes, I'm using a rather broad definition of that word here) which have taken place in this forum since the first image of the Enterprise was released several months ago? I doubt it.

There are just too many individual ideas of what would constitute an acceptable deviation from the design(s) which we saw in the Original Series, ranging all the way from "don't change it at all" to " that's not enough of a change; it should have been more".

Let me take the opportunity to remind everyone that, as long as discussion remains civil and respectful, this thread will be allowed to remain open. If I get the slightest hint that this is starting to turn into a brawl like some of those we've had here in the past, it will be closed.

Edit:

PixelMagic, do you suppose you could reduce the size of that comparison image just a bit? The horizontal stretching is a little much.

I prefer the new design to the original, which I find too boxey.

The new one looks lovely and the changes really aren't that big a deal.

I like the new design for the "reimagined" movie, but what I think they should of done is used the remastered version of the Enterprise from Remastered TOS. That way, we keep the original beauty of the ship and it would still look as though as it was made today.

But in all reality the new ship looks cool. The only thing I don't care for is the shorten "neck" that connects the saucer to the main part of the ship, it should of remained long like the original 1701.

Does anyone remember James Cawley of ST: Phase 2 talking about how the ENT is supposed to sprout wings or something just as silly. Looking at this design and that of the Kelvin I cannot possible imagine where he got those ideas from.

Ok, I scaled the image down, but dang, what ancient monitor are you running on? Any computer running a res lower than 1024x768 these days is just silly.

I find it entertaining that your original image was quoted by another poster so it's still here, stretching the thread.

Agreed. The original image was only 720px wide...how is that stretching anyone's monitor unless they're still running at 800x600 or something? I don't see why those with modern monitors should have to squint at lo-res images because a certain few are still hobbling themselves with antiquated technology.

I doubt there would have been any design that we ALL would have liked, I'm sure that the final design wasn't the only idea that Ryan Church came up with for the film. Hopefully, when the DVD comes out, if not sooner, we will get to see ALL of the designs Church came up with for the reimagined Enterprise.
