First Officers on Star Trek

I read somewhere recently that Uhura was up for the job of Decker's XO.

As for who the other person in the transporter malfunction was, maybe it was the original Navigator, with Ilia being a last minute replacement, seeing as how her arrival seemed to surprise everyone (and you think they'd know just who they'd be serving with).

This is exactly what Robert Wise (the director) says on the commentary track on TMP's DVD.

^ Even with films I've seen dozens of times I still don't like commentary tracks, it's too much like someone trying to speak with you in a film and I find it really off putting

I know what you mean. They are annoying, but sometimes they have valuable information in them!

It's possible, about as likely as Sulu (if we ignore the implication that she was after at least Sulu and the Assistant Chief Engineer in the chain of command in TOS), but I still think it's more likely that Scotty was the XO. BTW, it would also have made more sense to keep Decker as XO only and "promote" Sulu or Chekov to Science Officer (the former started as an Assistant Science Officer and the later was occassionally seen as Spock's relief/back-up in TOS).

But helm and tactical are necessary permanent positions, especially for a ship reeling from internal issues. And a Science Officer is needed for the investigation into this huge mystery probe. If anything, they could do without an XO for a few days.

I assume Decker must've had experience as a Chief Science Officer before. It's all moot though when they end up with Spock afterall, and Decker busies himself with the Ilia probe.

Outside of these very few vexing moments, William T. Riker was an outstanding TNG character whose adventures I've followed with great interest.

I agree with you...but I'd like to mention one more VERY cringeworthy Riker moment. There is a scene during the second part of "Encounter at Farpoint" where Geordie reports and Riker is totally pompous and all "Is this an offical report?!"..and poor LaForge has to do a "Lt. Cmd LaForge reports..." routine.. Farpoint Riker comes across as a totally different person to anything from later on anyway...

According to Jonathan Frakes, Gene Roddenberry had made the call that Riker be a hard-ass in the beginning, but later, he'd changed his mind and told Jonathan flat-out to "... put more Frakes into Riker." I can only imagine that Gene was really hunting for differences to include in TNG that would help it have its own texture, or flavour, compared with TOS products. Fortunately, it worked out for Riker by mid-First Season and I'm grateful for his contributions to TNG ... the series wouldn't have been as great as it was without him.

Probably because in TOS, there wasn't enough room on the bridge for a dedicated first officer's chair, so the XO would have to double up at another station.
Or just stand the whole time while on the bridge.

IIRC, in TMP Decker had to stand after he relinquished the science officer duties, and thus the science station chair, to Spock. After Spock took over at science, Decker's sole duty was that of the exec. Oddly enough, being the exec meant that he had to be on his feet; poor fella, I don't think he sat afterwards. I suppose he could have commandeered any seat, or sat on the railing, if he grew tired.

Decker faced a lot of indignities. First he lost the command and got demoted, then he got double duty, then he had to deal with Kirk's insecurities, "Stop competing with me Decker", and finally he lost his seat.

The Enterprise D was a much larger ship than Kirk's so the role of XO would be more essential no? The first episode deals with Picard setting out his expectations for Riker who I think fulfilled those and by later series appeared to be a true captain-in-waiting. I really can't imagine TNG without him.

As for Kira, sorry she has to be one of my most disliked characters and perhaps the reason DS9 is my least favourite series too. So many episodes seem to revolve around Kira being angry or disruptive because of 'Bajoran reasons' and I found it pretty tiresome. I can totally imagine DS9 without her.

Spock is the best first Officer, the only one that is Scientific on the Enterprise - 1701 and of most from Star Trek series rest.
