Yep - compare how ST:TMP looks to how TOS looked - and technically IN UNIVERSE some even believe ST:TMP took place 5 years (or less) after the last episode of TOS.

You would think that people would just give up on the "it doesn't look like TOS so therefore it can't be set before TOS" nonsense as an argument for disliking Discovery, but apparently not.

Everything suggests so far that TOS era Constitution class ships were just going through a REALLY odd design phase restricted to them only, and possibly one or two starbases, and the bulk of Starfleet either never adopted the uniforms and design aesthetic or only did so briefly.

The designer of the Connie was feeling nostalgic for the NX-Class

According to ENT, an Admiral Jefferies worked on the NX, maybe his great grand son worked on the Connie :p

The problem with Discovery, is it's not a prequel to TOS. It's a prequel to a hypothetical modern remake of TOS, yet they insist it's the same continuity. Weird.

I watch it as a standalone continuity, as much TOS as Smallville is Superman: The Movie and I'm happy.

I think if you take visuals at face value, it's indisputable.

Not unless you're into refitting and defitting, and then refitting again the Enterprise...

Updated visuals. It's been done before, it will be done again. Hell I'd be happy to see TAS redone visually with Discovery era design

For me it's more than just visuals. That I'd get used to. I did for all the shows and movies.

For me Discovery doesn't track well from a plot perspective as well. Now I'm not far enough long to judge if it's "Star Trek" in the sense of it's heart and soul (for lack of a better word). It took even a well regarded show like TNG 2 to 3 years to find its legs so I'm not expecting to get that feel right away. But so far, other than the general shape and outline of the ships I'm not seeing any similarity to the original series (except the mess hall, for some reason that is the one area that actually looks like it fits between Enterprise and the original series, though maybe a bit bigger but I can dismiss that due to the different ship class).

When I try to sit back and consider Discovery in the proper time period almost nothing fits. It looks, feels and acts like an almost total reboot to me. And it makes me curious why the showrunners, esp. in the early going, were doing contortions trying to explain that this is in essence a prequel to the original series. In a sense they open themselves up to unnecessary criticism. Now, sure, saying it's a total reboot might get them some flak from old time Trekkies, but by and large that would dissipate over time.

Or the other option is to set it later in continuity. Other than Sarek and Mudd being featured, I'm not really sure what impact that would have had on the show up to this point.

IMHO I find that I can enjoy the show more if I consider it outside the normal Trek continuity. Trying to do mental cartwheels to fit it storywise 10 years before the original series with the storylines and mysterious advanced technology never before seen I find is an exercise in futility.

Just completed "Si Vis Pacem….." , which is the first episode I think written by Kirsten Beyer, one of my favorite Voyager novelists. This was probably one of my favorites thus far. One we get to see a bit of the old Star Trek as in new species, new world. Parts of the planet reminded me of the movie Avatar, probably the luminescence.

When Saru asked them to hand over their communicators I knew that wasn't going to end well. I was a bit surprised at how quickly Saru was ready to betray his crewmates, and really the Federation. I thought maybe he was under the influence of the aliens, but he admitted to his betrayal. It'll be interesting to see what happens to him, and what happens with this summit the Pavan's are trying to create (though I doubt it actually happens).

And of course there's the sequence with the Klingons and the admiral. For a while I didn't know if the admiral was betrayed or not, I originally thought the Klingon woman, L'Rell was going with her, but she didn't, and it looks like she may wish she had.

And I'm still amused that the subtitles keep saying (In Klingon: ) Duh. Don't know who's idea that is but I think I can figure out they're speaking Klingon.

But all in all a good first episode for Kirsten (if it is her first).

The subtitles were structured differently in the streaming release.

The subtitles also varied between the US/Canada and Netflix too. Some things had different spellings, or even entire words.

Ok, didn't know that. But it just seems silly. I said earlier it's not like they would be speaking French ;)

My own headcanon there is that for Kelpiens, perpetual fear plays the same role that empathy does for us. Take empathy away from a human, and we make bad decisions - becoming a psychopath. Remove fear from a Kelpien and they likewise cannot function properly because the main constraint on their behavior is removed.

Yeah, and the Discovery novel that featured him did delve into his background. It's just that I didn't picture Saru up to this point going that far. I'm sure it will come up again later in the show and maybe it'll make more sense as I watch more episodes.

I've reached the 'mirror universe'--and 'Captain' Tilley had one of my new favorite lines 'I'd cut your tongue out and use it to lick my boots!' Damn girl. I didn't think you had it in you :ouch::ouch::nyah::nyah:

And replace all those beautiful planetscapes with blue forests? Yuk.

But I do want to see Kirk and the Enterprise with Discoprise costumes and sets. I expect a flood of photoshops to appear as soon as season 2 starts proper.
