This is one of the most common misconceptions that I've seen and, statistically, it just doesn't hold up.
I agree that a person can put whoever they want in the poll though; no argument there...

Any character I don't like is a Mary Sue! Even if her entire being revolved around her flaws. XDDDDDDD

This absurd photoshop always puts a smile on my face, but ...

... Chakotay is my favourite character on Voyager!
Why DO I like this??

I like Kes and Seven's outfits!
Thanks, these were on the homepage of a company that makes uniforms for airlines but such a long time ago that I don't remember which company it was.

I've always liked how "clean," how "crisp" your offerings are, Thomas. Everything's clear and there's a nice stylisation you have there! If I may be so bold, however ... Kes looks like she's a stroke victim, or something, in this one wallpaper. Not her most flattering headshot, sir ...

Hey TTF, I've been missing you ... :D Thanks for the compliments sir, I'm blushing. So you think Kes looks like a stroke victim? I don't know I feel she looks great in that pic! We probably have different concepts of stroke victims - but as the English saying goes, different strokes for different folks ! xD

That pic above comes from DARKLING, here's the original. Really, is this what a stroke victim looks like? :guffaw:

Probably.
A member can put in what he/she wants in their thread. It's only those characters the member selected, go with it if you like. If you want Seven of Nine, an overrated character IMO, part of a thread then please feel free to make your own. You can write and show all the love that mary sue character deserves. It's brilliant by the host to leave out VOY's ultimate show hog so members here can input her anyway.

Can anyone explain to me what a Mary Sue character is?

Well, wolves are pretty cool.
They are but I understand why people find Chakotay attractive. He might not be the most fascinating character ever created - although I've always liked him - but the guy has sex appeal. I don't fancy him since he looks very much like my late father ... but I understand the people who do ... :)

Wow, she does share a resemblance to that lady with the sewing show in that pic. (Who was paralyzed in half her face from a stroke)

Maybe you'd have to see her in action.

....maybe you'd have to have childhood memories of seeing younger Nancy sewing on her TV show when you'd happen upon your mother watching it.

Mary Sue-

TREKKIE'S TALE

By Paula Smith

"Gee, golly, gosh, gloriosky," thought Mary Sue as she stepped on the bridge of the Enterprise. "Here I am, the youngest lieutenant in the fleet - only fifteen and a half years old." Captain Kirk came up to her.
"Oh, Lieutenant, I love you madly. Will you come to bed with me?"
"Captain! I am not that kind of girl!"
"You're right, and I respect you for it. Here, take over the ship for a minute while I go get some coffee for us."
Mr. Spock came onto the bridge. "What are you doing in the command seat, Lieutenant?"
"The Captain told me to."
"Flawlessly logical. I admire your mind."

Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy and Mr. Scott beamed down with Lt. Mary Sue to Rigel XXXVII. They were attacked by green androids and thrown into prison. In a moment of weakness Lt. Mary Sue revealed to Mr. Spock that she too was half Vulcan. Recovering quickly, she sprung the lock with her hairpin and they all got away back to the ship.

But back on board, Dr. McCoy and Lt. Mary Sue found out that the men who had beamed down were seriously stricken by the jumping cold robbies , Mary Sue less so. While the four officers languished in Sick Bay, Lt. Mary Sue ran the ship, and ran it so well she received the Nobel Peace Prize, the Vulcan Order of Gallantry and the Tralfamadorian Order of Good Guyhood.

However the disease finally got to her and she fell fatally ill. In the Sick Bay as she breathed her last, she was surrounded by Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, and Mr. Scott, all weeping unashamedly at the loss of her beautiful youth and youthful beauty, intelligence, capability and all around niceness. Even to this day her birthday is a national holiday of the Enterprise.

By definition, a Mary Sue is an overpowered character who lacks personality flaws and weaknesses, who has all the other characters either fawning over her, or jealous of her amazingness, even if she's done nothing to earn this reputation.

Anyone who thinks Seven of Nine of all people fits this bill clearly just never watched any of her episodes. (Granted, the person on this thread who said that was pretty obviously trolling, and not very well.)

You have a point, Thomas. I may have been somewhat harsh with my criticism. Jennifer Lien was, without question, a woman whose delicate beauty only becomes more defined with every conversation on these boards ...

I'm not trolling but I have to state that Seven actually fits the description of a Mary Sue.
She could do anything from saving the ship, bringing people back from the dead and repair the warp core to fix Janeway's malfunctioning hairdryer.

But of course, she should have been in the poll. I think the OP just made a mistake.

Kes will always be my favorite, no matter what's going on in the "gray universe" right now.

PS
The Universe = The Star trek Universe
The Gray Universe = The terrible realm called "reality" in which we are trapped right now

You're not who I was referring to when I talked about a Troll.

But either way, Seven's entire character revolved around her having to learn from other characters and earn their trust. Every Seven-focused episode revolved around her having someone else prove her wrong about something important about her humanity, or morality in general. Virtually every Seven episode ended with Seven learning she was wrong about something ,weak in some area, and needed others help in some way.

Out of curiosity, what personality flaws and weaknesses did Kes possess?

There's only one Mary sue in Star Trek, and they're only a part time Mary sue anyway.

Wesley Crusher.

Edit: There may actually be another character more in common with Mary Sue than even Wesley Crusher, but I definitely won't name them.

I meant as in *powers hungry

She wants to explore and expand her powers, and it takes her down a dark path.

I can't think of any major character flaws for her. Maybe naive, but that's not treated as a flaw for her, like it sometimes for Ensign Kim, or the Doctor.

She's curious, optimistic, compassionate when others fail to be, a free spirit, Janeway adores her, As does Neelix, and maybe Paris. The Doctor adores her(and maybe secretly in love with her, as per "projections")

Towards the end of her time on the show, she becomes increasingly independent, and more powerful.
