Favorite and Least Favorite Character

Favorite main character: Kira, I just thought she was really well-written and three-dimensional, and I tend to gravitate towards strong female characters anyways, so I love her. Second place is definitely Odo.

Least favorite main character: Probably Jake; I don't dislike him but in the later seasons after he got older, he occasionally felt pointless. I also thought it was strange how he wanted to be a fiction writer and ended up as a journalist instead...

Least favorite recurring character: Hm, I didn't really like Vedek Bareil, his relationship with Kira had some potential but the character was just very boring to me. Not a great actor either.
Another character I hated was Dr Mora, the Bajoran scientist who raised Odo. He was really awful and borderline abusive to Odo and never willing to admit that what he did was wrong. He might have only been in two episodes but I just wanted to slap him whenever he was on-screen, honestly.

Favorite recurring character: Definitely Garak, just a fascinating complicated character with all his shades of deception and moral ambiguities.
Honorable mention: Ziyal, she had so much fascinating potential from her mixed-species upbringing, her traumatic life in a labor camp, the conflict between her love for her father and her relationship with Kira... but her character is very underdeveloped and then she is killed just to fuel Dukat's descent into 100% insane villainy without him having any redeeming qualities. I would have liked Ziyal to have more of a character arc, instead of being killed. She could have been disillusioned from her naive idealism by somehow being forced to acknowledge that her father was evil, and I can see Dukat being driven over the edge by his daughter's betrayal similarly to how he was by her death.

Who is your Favorite and least favorite character and why?

Favorite: Elim Garak, he is hands down my favorite because he is so mysterious, throughout the entire series you never know EVERYTHING about him. There are so many times when you think he has betrayed everyone, only to turn around and have done it all in a convoluted scheme to help the crew of DS9.

Least Favorite: Kai Winn, Not once did I ever enjoy her character. She was in my eyes the most evil of the characters because she used her religion and her power in the eyes of her followers to commit evil deeds. Not to mention her final act of crazy in the last few episodes of DS9. I hated everything about her.

Garak is a very interesting and multi-faceted character and one of my favorites, too. I liked the Garak novel "A Stitch in Time" for that matter.

Winn, on the other hand, was never likable. But I´m a fan of Louise Fletchers acting.

Jennifer Sisko is neither a favorite nor least favorite. She had only few possibilities to shine. Mirror Universe Jennifer wasn´t really interesting and was justifiably killed off in one of the MU episodes, one of many characters being killed off for that matter.

I'm military and living that life gives you a different outlook on things. Just as you said "it's only a piece of clothing" when you're in the military, that outfit you're wearing isn't "just a piece of clothing" it represents everything we stand for and everything we fight for. That piece of clothing defines who we are and when in ST a character betrayed that uniform by abandoning post or leaving Star Fleet or any other circumstance, they weren't just betraying a pice of clothing, they were beraying what that clothing stands for. Just like our U.S flag represents all of our history of wars and lives lost, it's not just a flag it's our past, our history, our tragedy. It's the same thing for uniforms. That's why the writers did that, as a character so gung ho Star Fleet he said things like that.

Respect for the (Star Fleet) uniform was mentioned, I believe, in a DS9 episode-"The Ship."

Come to think of it, in Babylon 5 Sheridan mentioned his respect for the Earth Force uniform.

But the thing is those uniforms aren't JUST costumes. The writers are trying to portray how actual military would act, I being military felt more connected to Sisko than any other captain because he was one of the only captains who actually acted military.

I admit I'm not military and would never want to be, my personality and belief systems are all wrong for that sort of life.
But is it not the ideal you swear allegiance to, not the jacket and slacks? The way I see it the uniform is just a tool that provides certain functions (like recognition) not an ideal by itself.
So, to me, it would have made more sense if he had said "you've betrayed Starfleet" not "you've betrayed your jumpsuit!"

Besides that Starfleet is not a modern day army, it's a semi-military organization in the far future, why would he act like a military commander today?

Favorites: The Cardassians, especially Garak. It's such a turnaround; I started to dislike Cardassians in TNG (after the torture of Picard), but I started liking them more and more as I watched DS9, and now I love all Cardassians (except Madred of course)!

Least favorite: Kira. To me, she was too aggressive, and was always overreacting to everything.

BTW, does anyone else feel Visitor was more attractive in WYLB than in Emissary and, perhaps, more attractive now than she was in WYLB?

Favorite(s): It's a tie, Jadzia (obviously), Kira, and Garak. I felt like Jadzia and Kira were some of the best strong female characters in Trek. I really loved being exposed to more of their back stories (DS9 was great about that). I must list Garak even though he's only a recurring character. His sketchiness is certainly matched by his wit, and I love that we only get bits and pieces about his background every once in a while - and even then, it's hard to tell what is the truth and what isn't.

Least favorite: Kai Winn for obvious reasons. Sure she fulfilled the villain role well, but that doesn't make me hate her with a burning passion any less.

In Emissary, she had too much recent baggage, which is what the writers planned I'm sure. Yes, she grew more attractive as the series went on. Don't know for recently, I haven't kept up with what she's doing now.

actually, when we get court martialed or NJP'd they always say "you swore an allegiance to your country, to your flag, and to you uniform that you would act in a way that portrays the navy in a positive light." or something along those lines. our uniforms hold the beliefs we are fighting for, it's right there in the ribbons rack. I'm not upset or anything, just giving you as much info as possible in response you your earlier question.
