Farscape - anything I need to know?

backstept

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I'm about to watch this series straight through . . . anything I need to know before I start?
I caught several episodes while it was airing, but I never watched it with any regularity.
I know it's one of science fiction's best shows so I know it's going to be good . . .

The DVDs have the correct order, which isn't that different from the aired order, anyway. After the pilot, which I think is a strong episode, it struggles a bit, as most first seasons do, before it finds its voice. If you watch the last four episodes of season one, though, and aren't interested, don't bother continuing. But I'm guessing you will want to continue after that.

The DVDs don't quite have the right order. The season 2 finale is put on the second to last disk in order to keep the Liars, Guns, and Money three parter on one disk. But the DVDs warn you about that before you play the episode, so you won't have trouble forgetting.

I haven't started watching yet, so I'm nowhere near season 2
I guess I'll burn that bridge when I come to it . . . or however that saying goes :D

About the only comment I'd offer is that Farscape is an acquired taste - it definitely isn't for everyone (although one can say that about any show). The first season is stronger than most in that the characters are well established from day one and the actors absolutely owned their characters from the beginning...but in other ways the first season wanders about a bit. As HA said if you get to the end of the first season and aren't hooked, it's not for you.

Give it a go and be sure to let us know what your impressions are. :bolian:

The only things you need to remember while watching Farscape are that crackers don't matter, time wounds all heels, don't talk about the window and of course that's not a moon, it's a Budong!
Keep that in mind and you'll be fine. ;)

Backstept:

One thing I'd suggest is you should think of Farscape as a modern heir to Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers, only with dolllops of sarcasm and intelligence. At first, I had a hard time getting into it, partly because of the "muppets" like Rygel and Pilot. But once I ignored that, I really got into it.

I also think when they added Chiana is when the show finds its voice. Ben Browder as Commander Crichton is one of the funniest action characters ever. He's a wise-cracking Southern tough guy with a penchant for quoting from 20th century movies and TV shows.

I think you'll enjoy the shows, Backstept!

If you like Star Wars, I don't see how you could not like Farscape! One of my favorites.

You know, I'd be bloody impressed if he was able to quote any movies or TV from any other century. Show being made in 1999 and all... :p Just something random that crossed my mind while reading.

I just finished Durka Returns
love the show

I thought it was funny how sometimes they said Durker instead of Durka
and it was cool how Chiana was introduced

I don't have a favorite character at the moment . . . they are all so great

I just finished the 'Liars Guns and Money' trilogy and I have to say, I love this show.

I like every character in the cast, a definite rarity for me. Even Rygel and Pilot--I was a little wary at the start of the show about puppets being so prominent, but both the voice actors and puppeteers pull off the feat of turning them both into fully realized characters.

Scorpius is one of the greatest villains in televised science fiction, and Crichton--damn has he gone through some changes! Someone in another thread said that Crichton's never the same after he puts on a PK uniform, and I have to agree. I never thought much of Ben Browder's acting chops while he was on Stargate (then again, I never thought all that much of SG-1 at all), but he is very impressive here.

Going to watch 'Die Me Dichotomy' and then start season 3 tonight.

I hope you don't need your heart, because that episode is going to break it.

I just finished it. :( Probably the best episode I've seen so far.

Fuck, I miss this show.

I'm only halfway through the series and I'm already dreading the day I finish the Peacekeeper Wars. Which won't be too far off, at the rate I'm watching this show.

I always thought "Die Me" was an overrated episode. "Plan B", now THAT is my all time favorite episode. Certainly the most action packed bombastic thing they ever did :D Oh wait, "Won't Get Fooled Again" is my favorite episode :D

Won't Get Fooled Again is Farscape being ubercool. Its just one of many, though. I so envy you-I watched the series and its no longer a "new" thing for me, more's the pity!

I need to watch this series again. Anybody have any info about the 1st season on DVD? It's not available through Netflix or at my local library.
