Falling Skies - Season 2- discussion/Spoilers

Well I like Ryan Robbins, so I'm hoping he becomes a regular in season 3. ;)
A couple episodes before when Tom assumed command they had pushed Dai forward as if he was next in the chain of command. After the reveal of his being a Gunnery Sergeant at the end with the link up with Colonel Porter. You had Weaver, Tom and the redneck standing together as the leadership of the 2nd.

I am assuming he comes back and becomes "gunny" little different from the office manager on JAG. TV likes to have "gunny's" on their character bios

Wasn't he also the unnamed Colonel at the beginning of NuBSG who Six kissed (wearing old-man's makeup w/ a photo of Boxey on the desk) before he became the first casualty of the holocaust?

He's likable and I appreciate that he doesn't hit the cornpone accent too hard, but he's got redshirt written all over him. would be nice if the writers don't do the obvious thing in his case...

NO WAY! he totally was! I didn't know that! I had to look it up
He's credited as Armistice Officer in the miniseries, and also later on as Charlie Connor in the series, and Diego on Caprica

I like Ryan Robbins and I hope Tector stays around for a while

Why would anyone build a parking building and a mall underground? It's not quite as insane as the horror movie about the haunted basement in the bayou, but still.

Also still, an improvement on last week. The confrontation over turning in the guns was inflated and Pope was still a cliche. But the politicking and coup were done without unrealistic levels of blood lust.

Sadly the budget didn't really permit mass scenes that worked effectively. Willing suspension of disbelief and all that.

Hah, Magggie is just looking for an excuse.

Loved seeing Terry O'Quinn, but didn't really buy his character and the way people, including the military, just did what he said. I think a coup would've come a whole lot sooner--long before the Second Mass. showed up. Still, an entertaining episode.

This was pretty cool. I was expecting Terry O'Quinn, but not Matt Frewer. Loved the historical references, as usual. They made short work of Terry O'Quinn, but I'm surprised the military was deferring to him to begin with. He just wanted his face up on Mount Rushmore.

There were several really nice character moments in this one, most notably Tom's speech quoting Manchester, the doc telling off the heart surgeon, Pope dissing Manchester and Tector's loyalty to the 2nd Mass.

There are lots of them, with Montreal's being the largest, and it's usually because of limited land, to provide shopping around metro stations, or to connect important above-ground buildings.

Interesting link, although strictly speaking the tunnel complexes aren't quite the same thing. The only examples I knew about were Seattle and Kansas City (which for some reason isn't on the list.) Seattle I thought was an overbuild after a disaster and KC was using left over salt mines. Obviously a lot more than I knew. And I guess Charleston isn't as swampy/close to sea level as I thought.

I think they all wanted some kind or normality back.. having civilian leadership is one thing amongst that to show they are rebuilding civilization.

I think they had a good start with the Manchester character but then turned him into a kind of "standard" powerhungry guy who needed to be get rid off so the main heroes can go on their mission. It was too easy and kind of disappointing.

Personally i'd have put more emphasis on the strategic reason to keep low.. all these people concentrated in one nice spot is just a huge juicy target for the Aliens and as a civilian leader i'd do my best to keep low as long as possible until military strength is sufficient to begin offensive operations.
Now to decide the point at which that happens can be tricky and a good point to have disagreements about leading to the same result without just labeling him as powerhungry.

All considered it was still a good episode.. i had a feeling Charleston wouldn't be all that it was promised to be and i was right. Now the preview for next week is really interesting.. time did fly with this season to have the finale already.

^ It sure did. I can't believe we're at the finale already. I hope they don't kill off all our new military guys. It would be nice if the Second Mass had more people again.

Crystal City south of Arlington, VA is a full-blown massive mall/parking/tunnel complex.

Post 911, you'd think that they would be making a lot of core scrapers.

Remember in Stingray how the entire eastern seaboard would retract into underground bunkers the second they thought that Atlantis was on a warfooting?

That was fricking mental.

I thought it was a good episode as well, albeit filler episode number 2.

They were attempting to setup the struggle between civilian v. military control in a post apocalyptic world. It seems like a silly debate based on their circumstances.

Also, maybe it's just me but I just cannot take Matt Frewer as the General seriously. When ever he speaks I want to laugh because of the characters he's played heretofore.

It's like Adam Sandler trying to play a serious roll.

Also, the aliens in these various invasion films who travel presumably tens of thousands of light years from their homes - with super high tech - always seem to have difficulty finding human life signs to kill despite their clearly way advanced technology. :wtf:

^^^I was thinking that Manchester and Bressler were kidding themselves about the aliens not knowing about them. That the Charleston compound was just one of the reservations the overlord asked Tom about, except that they just let the humans imagine they were undetected. Surely forging parties were both detectable and necessary.

Maybe its generational (or Canadian) for us who remember Max Headroom. On another board someone said something was up when Matt Frewer and Terry OQuin where cast. I do remember his darkside as a RCMP officer on Intelligence.

I still shake my head at the wall insulation keeping the aliens away when that convoy was the only heat source in New England.

Well, the whole "hide the heat source but drive at night with all these headlights on" sort of blew the validity of them trying to hide their location.

for me he'll always be the neighbor's dad from Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Berlinghoff Rasmussen and more recently Taggart from Eureka

Exactly right.. I think the aliens know about Charleston but because the humans are taking no overt actions against them, they are leaving them be, just like the Overlord said they would... Maybe they made a deal with Manchester, just like they tried to do with Tom.
