EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

^ Yeah, he is. Van Basten OTOH looked like he had no idea what he was doing (and I'm a huge fan of the guy).

Finally, the Dutch team I've come to know over the years. They play a few good games and then they already believe that they've won the tournament. And we all know how that ends...

Congratulations to the Russians, they deserved their win. They deserved a 4-0 win in regular time already. They were better on all accounts.

Now it's up the Azzurri to complete the curse tomorrow. :D

Props to Russia and Guus. Van Basten IMHO made a tactical mistake in letting Boulahrouz along with Kuyt go out so early. Once Boula. was subbed out Arshavin and Zhirkov started dominating that left side of the pitch. With Kuyt out the Dutch backline started looking really porous. Kuyt is the best "defensive striker" in the world. You may laugh at such ridiculous title but his workrate is crucial to the Dutch system.

Apparently there's some discussion about the yellow/red-card against the Russian (Kolodin?) at the end of regular time. It seems that the referee's decision to withdraw the card was quite fishy...
But the Russians really deserved that victory anyway and I can't imagine the UEFA doing anything about it, except maybe not letting Michel referee the final.

It wasn't fishy at all. Lubos made the right call after initially making the wrong call. It was never a yellow card offense. In fact it wasn't a foul at all. The replay shows that clearly.

I do agree that the red card decision was fishy. IMO the ball was not over the line.

Yeah, but the reason he changed his mind wasn't because of that, but because the ball was supposedly over the line.

Was that the official reason from Lubos in the referee's report? The broadcast here never mentioned the ball being over the touch line. I think he consulted with the linesman who probably told him that Kolodin didn't commit any foul in that lunge.

Well, we don't know what he'll write in his report yet. ;)

But withdrawing a card that was given to a specific player is problematic in any case (I've seen countless football games, probably close to a thousand or so by now, and I don't remember that ever happening before). A very well known swiss referee said on german television, that the distinction would be, that if the yellow card was shown because it was a severe foul it should have sticked, if it was because of a tactical foul it could be withdrawn.
The problem is, that the official rules don't seem to be quite clear in this area, obviously it can't be that player can be fouled without consequence just because the ball isn't in play anymore. Any I don't think the linesman told the referee that it wasn't a foul to begin with, because he wasn't as close, and he doesn't really have that kind of authority anyway.

Wow, another day, another good game. I was actually rooting for the Dutch, but the Russians played a very good game.

You need to watch more then because I saw a case this year in the premier league. :)

The ref have to show the yellow card and write the player's name down before it becomes official. He can in theory change his mind in between.

No the linesman definitely had a better angle of view. It hard to say if the ball was out or not but either way Kolodin didn't commit the foul!

Congrats to Russia. It's nice to see teams who aren't the traditional powerhouses doing well. I'm hoping for a Russia/Turkey final. :p

I'm hoping for an Italy-Turkey final. :D

What a game last night, I am so happy for Russia, they fought for it with their hearts and definitely deserved victory. And frankly it looked like Holland went in there convinced of having won already, they deserved a little lesson in humility, especially van der Sar and van Nistelrooy.

I'm looking forward to Italy today. I don't usually watch soccer unless it's the world cup, but I've seen a lot of great games so far, so I'm glad I decided to watch.

^ Tell me about it. I can't wait until it starts. But mostly I can't wait to see if Italy can make it one step further down the tournament. It would be fantastic. :D

Almost game time. Here is Azzurri's likely lineup

I'd be very surprised (although happy to be) if Spain doesn't lose this match clearly. They are even more predictable than the Netherlands in their quarter-final collapse.
