EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

Spain can play beautiful and impressive footbal one match and completely stink the next. A bit like the Dutch I guess. ;) So just like with the Dutch I'm always very hesitant to conclude anything about Spain from just one good match. But they definitely played well today. But not by so much that I would say all the other teams have to crap themselves (although that might work as a surprise tactic).

Spain's defence still worries me and will most likely be the cause for them not winning the cup but Villa has just made every club in EUROPE check there bank balance and if I was RAFA I would buy David Villa.

^ I've seen clips of grass growing that were more interesting then the match between Greece and Sweden. ;)

It's not really Sweden's fault. It's just every time Greece get the ball they play keep ball without trying to go forward.

I'm giving them points for effort. It doesn't help that they can only string two passes together without a two-footed challenge flying in.

What a weird goal by Petter Hansson that was. On Dutch television Gert-Jan Verbeek, who was his trainer at sc Heerenveen, claimed they actually trained on these kind of situations and that Hansson always loved them. He sure looked like he was having fun trying to get the ball in with all allowed parts of his body. :)

And on the tenth day of the sixth month in the year of our lord two thousand eight, the nation of Spain turned up for a major international football tournament.

And the rest of the world simultaneously crapped itself.

In WC 2006 Spain came out in their opener and crushed the Ukraine 4-0. They went to the top of their group with maximum points, and scored 8 goals total. Then, normal service resumed. Spain's reputation isn't that they don't play well, they do, they're a talented team. It's that they manage to disappoint, and not keep winning, on the back of such early performances.

Greece. Can't see the back of them soon enough. For long spells this team not only didn't have any desire to attack, their back line had no desire to even pass the ball anywhere but to themselves. Glad to see two goals come out of that game. With the oldest team Sweden lining up against a 5 man defense, I was certain it was going to be nil nil.

^As I said, there was something different this time. Everything was just clicking. It would have helped if they'd played Fabregas from the start, though. Forget Torres, Fabregas and Villa are the future for Spain.

Well, say what you want about friendlies right before a tournament, but Spain used theirs to fix some of their problems. As I noted early in this thread, Spain played the US very poorly, in part because their midfield was imbalanced trying to shoe horn in an extra midfielder which left Torres alone up top.

Spain just may be on song. There's nothing from yesterday's performance to say otherwise. I'm just concerned they, as always, flatter to deceive. I do agree though that Villa and Fabregas are the future of Spain, but I am a little slower to dismiss Torres coming off the season he had for 'Pool.

Boy, how I wish those Villa to Arsenal rumors were true now.
