EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

And then Poland is not allowed to beat Croatia with a bigger goal difference than Austria beats Germany.

minor offence.

1. UEFA made it head to head over goal difference, which is stupid so a Germany draw would be enough to take them through though a Austria win would mean Poland result would be mooted.

2. The manager admitted "offence" and lets face it shirt pulling is not minor and why players do it I will never know.

@1: If Germany wins or draws they are through, if Austria wins and Poland doesn't or does with the same or less goals difference then Austria beats Germany, then Austria is through and if Poland beats Croatia with at least two goals more than Austria beats Germany, then Poland is through. If it is only one goal difference I guess most goals scored count? And after that least goals conceded?

These rules do have the funny consequence that if in group A the Czechs and Turks tie, they have to have a penalty shoot-out to decide who goes through, because at this point they both have the same number of points and exactly the same goal count.

@2: O, I agree that it is an offence, and so did Beenhakker in all his anger. He just argued that it happens all the time and no one ever gives a penalty for it, "so why now, why us" was basically his lament. Not a terribly good argument against the penalty, although his point is (mostly) true. It happens a lot and is only very seldom penalised. I think there was a similar situation during the The Netherlands - Czech Republic match at EURO 2000, where Holland got a penalty kick basically for the same foul and also in the final minute or so of the match (and I now realise, it also was a penalty kick in favour of one of the organising countries... hmmm). Anyway, if I still can pick out a situation 8 years ago, then it must not have happened very often in the mean time I guess. Was the penalty for Croatia in their opening match similar? I don't remember the details of the offence.

Bah, the Polish shouldn't complain, they were lucky not to be down 3:0 at half-time. And their goal probably was offside anyway.

It is true. It's rarely penalized. But Webb just didn't hand out the penalty the first time, he stopped the free kick, warned the players, and Lewandowski still grabbed a handful of jersey and pulled the player all the way down. Beenhakker should be angry with his player.

Webb made the right call and others should follow, I can't understand how you need to grab onto a shirt and pull to mark a person:wtf:

Netherlands vs France now, could be a very interesting game - France looking to redeem themselves and the Netherlands played great in their first game.

You gotta love the dutch team this year, what a beautiful football they are playing. That offensive power is simply overwhelming.

Well, I don't know about you people, but I'm going Dutch now ... any team that humbles Italy is okay by me, anyways.

Now that was total football. Van Basten is going to look like a genius now. What a performance by the men in orange. The completely humiliated the two strongest European team by talent. To be fair though I think the two scorelines the oranje have accumulated do look more flattering than the actual quality of their team. Most of the Dutch goals have come form wide open counterattacks. Their defense is very suspect. It was absolutely embarrassing for Henry to have not buried that golden chance.

France and Italy are now both out of the tournament as I am sure Van Basten is going to tell his B team to mail it in against Romania.
