EURO 2008 - The Official Trek BBS Thread

Best game of EUR0 2008 and a joy to watch though it could of ended 5-2 if more chances had been taken but I will accept and love the 3-0 win for the Dutch who I do like watching.

What a game between Holland and Italy. The Italians were a complete mess after the first goal, and only managed to put some pressure during the middle of second half. But the Dutch sure brought their A game.

However, considering the very poor France, Romania games, I still say Italy will advance.

god, anyone but Germany. please.

:klingon:

Bestest of best scene in my life: 2004, a week after graduating school, in a bar filled with Germans, with the exception of my school class - a group of about 20 Austrians. Holland is kicking Germany's butt. Germans depressed, my classmates very, very happy.

At some point, a German comes over to our table.

"Ach Mensch, ihr Ösis seid doch nur für die Holländer, weil ihr gegen uns seid, Mensch."

about 5 seconds of silence. Then, a random classmate of mine ..

"Ah geeh?"

:D

Mind you, the current German team is actually rather likable, IMHO. So it's nothing personal when I say that they may not be allowed to win. It's just that they're Germany :D

Also, I was annoyed by a group of German hooligans on the Vienna underground today. So me not wanting Germany to win is almost rational!

---

That being said, my current prediction for the final: Germany vs. Holland.

Great game by the oranje today. They crapped all over Italy in a manner I haven't seen since the 1970 final.

I am still puzzled by Donadoni's decision to go for Ambrosini instead of De Rossi or Materazzi for Chiellini. As I said before Materazzi's form has been very poor this season. He looked physically done. Just had no pace to keep up with the NL players. No wonder he went out early in the 2nd half due to a muscle strain.

I just realized how many top level managers came from Saachi's great Milan team of the late 80s. Most of them had or has very high profile jobs. This makes me feel even more proud of that side.
  • Roberto Donadoni (Italy),
  • Frank Rijkaard (Netherlands, Barcelona)
  • Marco Van Basten (Netherlands, Ajax)
  • Carlo Ancelotti (Juventus, Milan)
  • Ruud Gullit (Chelsea, Newcastle).

Possible future managers from that same team.

  • Paolo Maldini
  • Billy Costacurta
  • Mauro Tassotti

First goal, by v.Nistelrooy clearly off side.

There was an Italian defender lying next to the goal, he canceled any off-side.

Didn't catch that while watching live, but see now how they came to that decision. When I saw it I thought it was the worst decision I had ever seen. Glad to be mistaken.

What an utter thrashing delivered by the Dutch. Displays like that remind us why we're football fans (assuming, of course, you're not Italian). I had France and Italy coming out of that group, but based on the what I saw today, anyone could come out with the Netherlands now being the favorites.

I can tell you, no one was more surprised at the way the Dutch team played then we ourselves were yesterday evening. But it was great, best match they played in a long long team. Let's hope they can keep it up!

Oh, and ChiLlBeserker, when in 2004 were 'we' kicking Germany's butt? I remember the EURO 2004 opener for The Netherlands, which was a lousy game which ended in 1-1. That butt kicking? Well, as long as you had fun.

I predicted Germany to win the tournament. Still don't see much reason to change that. Time will tell...

You know, for years now I've been hoping/expecting the Dutch to play well at either the Euro or the World Cup. I really really hope this is the year.

Nice to see my "other" national team not sucking for a change, 3-0 is considered impressive in football after all :p. I hope they can keep up the tempo until the finale!

We got our asses royally kicked, and we deserved it. Kudos to the Dutch team, they played a superb game. Serves us for being too sure of ourselves. Maybe now our players will move their ass and focus on the next game. We usually perform better when we are distressed, panicked, outnumbered and on the edge of defeat.

Congrats to the Dutch! I support anything that will see the Italians leave this tournament early. I think they're overrated and I still harbor some resentment over 2006.

I expect increasing diving efforts by the Italians now.
Sportsmanship much?

Oh well. Putting a ';)' there next time around ...

Russia is disappointing. Spain just scored 3-0 and there is nothing the Russian could do to avoid it. If Russia plays like this in the next matches, they'll have a hard time against Sweden and Greece. Is Hiddink's magic gone or can they still pull it off?

Hee, Russia scored. Probably too late to change anything substantial in the match, but it wasn't looking like they would.

Edit: and they just missed an enormous chance for 3-2. And while typing this Spain scores 4-1.

Congratulations Spain.

And on the tenth day of the sixth month in the year of our lord two thousand eight, the nation of Spain turned up for a major international football tournament.

And the rest of the world simultaneously crapped itself.

Just remember Spain started out really well during the World Cup also and then they fizzled out against France.

There was something about that performance though, something I've not seen from Spain in a long time.
