Episode IX Speculation and Discussion

Looks like the Episode IX cast has been announced and filming starts next week...

A few takeaways...
They are sticking with the Episode IX is the last of the Skywalker Saga.
No Keri Russell.
Yes Billy Dee Williams.
Yes Mark Hamill.
Yes... Carrie Fisher. It appears that they're going to use unused footage from TFA for this one.

The cast consists of:

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. Joining the cast of Episode IX are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will be joined by veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian.

Wonder if Billie Lourd will have a bigger part, what with her being announced with the cast.

Apparently, they intend to film in the same space that served earlier as the Rebel base on Yavin IV. If it were up to me, and I had footage of Carrie Fisher I could use as a fitting denouement, then place her there and destroy the base. Now she is a martyr for the cause. They can rally round her memory and kick the shit out of the First Order.

Honestly? It doesn't at all. Star Wars lends itself to the "small universe" paradigm, which is a shame.

On the other, it would probably end up being written so poorly, improbably, and idiotically that it's better just to leave it as another unsolved mystery in the sequels.

Is this the first we've officially heard Episode IX called the finale of the Skywalker saga? I have to confess, I'd been assuming it would be going on indefinitely, with them just changing casts every every few movies.
I'm not surprised by Mark Hamill's return, I've been assuming all along that he'd be back as a Force Ghost, but I am surprised by the unused footage of Carrie Fisher. I had just assumed she'd be written out as having died between movies or was just going to offscreen somewhere.
I wonder what kind of footage it will be, and how much of it we'll get?

Quite likely, yes. He's involved somehow. I think there's a lot of potential revelations that will come in the next film, especially ones that will undo things established in TLJ. Considering sources who avowed that Rey was not a Skywalker also said with absolute certainty that Leia wouldn't be in Ep IX, it stands to reason that the new movie is open to anything JJ wants..
