Entertainment Weekly Cover Story (7/28)

:brickwall: I didn't know bad fanfic writers were getting hired to write actual books. I'm really glad I stick to TOS/TNG novels (I got lost in the 5 billion DS9 novels, although I liked them when I could still follow them).
To be fair she's not a horrible writer.

She's just trash at coming up with good storylines and ignores prior characterization to tell the story she wants to tell.

Why would you not verify something a random told you on the internet before making up your own mind? I don't read star trek novels anymore (I think the last one was the section 31 series) but just go buy one of her books, read it and decide for yourself before shitting all over someone who uses this forum.
Or he could you know just check memory beta where things I mentioned are confirmed.

Or if he has to just check one of the books out from his local Library.

Judge for yourself, or go ask for more the a single person's opinion in the Trek Lit forum.

It is a lot better then it sounds.

I dropped out when she brought Janeway back. Some people love that kind of stuff, I don't. It was pretty much the nail in the coffin of the Berman-era books for me. Over the last couple of years, the only one I've bought outside of TOS was Dayton Ward's 30th Anniversary TNG book.

Because, like Fateor says

Memory Beta confirms everything. I wouldn't even bother with getting a book like that from the Library, even if my local library system had it (which it doesn't, they have a few Voyager books but they're all from the old Pocket Books numbered line, even though the library does buy the new TNG/TOS/DS9 books as they come out they never buy the VOY or ENT stuff).

I'd never read that Q story. Beyer shouldn't even be allowed to write Star Trek novels, and she's working on Discovery. Every time I think I hate Discovery as much as possible, it finds a way for me to hate it more. Hiring someone who is now my most hated Star Trek writer in existence, and of course revealing she's some "Gene's Vision" nut, would have made me instantly hate the show even if I didn't hate it for all the other reasons.

But her writing ability is good, even if you don't agree with her creative decision regarding Q. If she is given character guidelines to which her writing should adhere (and I'm sure that is the case -- TV writers don't have the autonomy to do whatever they want to an established character), then I think she could provide some interesting and well-crafted stories.

She has a reputation among Star Trek novel readers as someone who can craft a good story that successfully references past Trek events while telling that story -- which is something that many trek fans appreciate. She tells a good story with well-crafted dialogue and in a fun way.

Hate, hate, hate.....
There is so much hate in this world...
Geez, the show hasn't even aired a single minute....
You know what I LOVE..? I love the fact that Gene came up with this crazy show called Star Trek in 1966 and how incredibly AMAZING it is that it's still alive more than 50 (!!!) years later, and it's about to recieve a new incarnation! Think about it..! It truly is an incredible feet, and if you told Gene in 1966 that in 2017 a multi million dollar spin off would be produced with international distribution, he probably would have told you you were absolutely nuts! If there is one reason why I already LOVE Discovery, it's because of this.. 'cause I think it's so incredibly awesome that this show -'our show'- is still alive and ready for a new adventure! I wish this kind of love upon you.. I wish you could rise above the hate...

The Enterprise books are actually pretty good in story, characterization, and writing so you might want to check those out sometime.

You seem to be a minority here, so far.
By that same note however "here" isn't an accurate representation of the general public's view on a thing.

Which was the Q Book where the Q Continuum places a time bomb in "Time Square" and SuperQ ("Miranda") saves the day?
That was a weird story.

Maybe on this site, on others I frequent she's the Karen Travis of Star Trek novels.

As someone who loves Karen Traviss's work (she's my favorite Star Wars writer, and that's saying something since I love a lot of SW writers/books) I don't really like that particular comparison.

Well, I only know her from her Halo novels so maybe that's the problem.
