Discovery not being able to decide whether its bridge crew are glorified extras or actual characters is not a strength of the show.
it's not, but it's not a problem that begins with DSC. See Sulu, Chekov, Uhura, Kim, Chakotay and Mayweather (just for starters).
Did we not learn as much about Airiam in that one episode?

Well, my two-pence about this - Enterprise failed to hold my interest, and I never finished watching it. It got cancelled after four years, so I guess it wasn't as popular as people wanted it to be. To be honest, it felt like Burman was trying to rip off TOS.
DSC has held my interest, and I have kept watching. Five years on, it's still going.
It's down to individuals as to what they like and don't like. Believe me, I could spend years saying what I think was wrong with Enterprise and JJ Trek - but those are just my opinions, and basically only matter to me - IDIC ;-)

I'm not a fan of these kind of threads really. I feel they promote division between the fandom and just puts people offside. I feel like there's a much better way to say stuff like "I think Enterprise is really good because" or "Discovery is my favourite show because" and doesn't put it in comparison to other shows and makes the argument about how why show is supposed to be good stand on it's own feet. I don't feel like these arguments about shows respect the ideas of Star Trek of IDIC and the United Federation of Planets about accepting others.
100% agree. To me, when people talk about the values that Star Trek purportedly is all about and then make sure to create distinct groups to say some things are good and bad it misses the point.
I agree. We all like Trek, why can't we just allow each other to enjoy what we enjoy about it and not harsh on people who like something we don't?
Some people seem to have trouble differentiating between subjective preferences and objective superiority. The notion of assigning the latter to any art reminds me of this scene in "Dead Poet's Society".

I keep asking myself that question, and I keep seeing different aspects of fandom expressed. I was listening to a radio show and discussing sports fandom, and a statement stood out to me regarding Trek fans. "Fans become very emotionally attached a certain way and any change is viewed as a threat." And I feel like that's where Trek keeps getting at when ever there is a new installment.
Here are some ways to improve the characters, to the very admirable level of "Enterprise:"
- Michael Burnham's boyfriend Book reveals that she got him pregnant
- The U.S.S. Discovery now has a Detontamination Chamber, so we can get to know the crew better. Saru and Season-4 Tilly are rubbing each other up first.
- Each character's clothes and underwear will slide off during a mission. The audience will finally see what Saru looks like nekkid
- Burnham will be faced with a diplomatic incident caused by Book's cat using someone's sacred flower bed as a litterbox.
- And our great captain will declare, "If anything happens to Book's Queen, I'll be the one fertilizing their sacred roses!"
- Dr. Culber opts to let an entire race die thst could easily be saved, because a cooler race might evolve in their place someday.
- Country music to introduce the cast each week.
- The Kelpians introduced Earth to velcro.

You missed
- Michael goes through Pon Farr, since she was raised on Vulcan. Hijinx ensue.
- Saru and Tilly start doing Vulcan massage during their off-hours
- The Emerald Chain stuff gets really weird, since Osyrra uses her pheromones to brainwash all the men. More hijinx.
- During the Emerald Chain takeover, Detmer, while dropping down from a Jeffries Tube, snags her top and is forced to run around the ship saving her crewmates wearing a handbra
I find Michael Burnam too perfect. She makes quick decisions (that is what a good leader does) but she doesn’t seem to be effected by every decision she makes; and she always makes the right decision.
Archer agonized over every decision he made. Command wasn’t easy for him, and that made him more human because he considered the consequences of his actions.

I also think that Enterprise was cut short too soon before it really found it’s legs (despite the opening theme)
Starfleet was new in Archer's time and his ship was the first one to go into deep space. He agonized over things because Starfleet was doing them for the first time. And he had to deal with the Vulcans constantly watching and sitting in judgment.
Not the same situation in any other Star Trek series, including DSC.
By the 23rd and 24th (and 25th and 32nd) Centuries, Starfleet has precedents, established protocols, and experience. If they agonize over basic things like Archer did, it would look like they were incompetent.
To quote Spock himself in "The Enemy Within", he told Kirk, "You haven't the luxury of appearing anything less than perfect. If you do, they lose faith, and you lose command."
Would you want to follow someone who looks like they're constantly messing up or would you want to follow someone who knows what they're doing?

OP is entitled to think that. Starting a thread like this in the DSC forum is a bit of a dick move though. I could go onto the VOY or ENT forums and declare them inferior to whatever other show, but why would I do that? It won’t change anyone else’s minds and it’s just negative energy. If people enjoy those shows, I’m happy for them. There’s plenty of Trek for everyone.
I know I shouldn’t rise to the bait, but if ENT was a better show it would presumably have lasted more than four seasons and wouldn’t have killed the TV franchise stone dead for , what, twelve years? I tried rewatching it a few years ago but it was just such a slog I gave up. But whatever. Say what you like about DSC, but it resurrected Trek on TV not just successfully, but enormously successfully. There’s currently more Star Trek than I know what to do with and it’s all a result of DSC.
