Endgame and Neelix

I often think about how Neelix will never know the fate of Voyager when it returns to Earth at the end. Thoughts?
He would know. They could send a message from the AQ and it would take a while to get to him but it would eventually get to him.

In the relaunch novels (not really a spoiler) Starfleet has perfected slip stream drive and Voyager goes back and forth from the Delta Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant. They are in constant contact with Neelix.

I think of that scene in Endgame where Neelix and Seven are playing kadis-kot and then he would get.. nothing. Least for a while, but hopefully they would send him a message. It would be odd for him not knowing.

Why not??? If Starfleet could contact Voyager 20-25 thousand light years deeper inside the DQ, there's no reason to think they couldn't let Neelix know..

On the side of Starfleet, yes. But on Neelix' side? Perhaps an Astrometrics-equivalent level of technology is required to receive such a transmission... does the Talaxian colony have that?

Moreover, what would Janeway really have to write?

Hello Neelix,

How are you? We're fine.

History has a funny way of working itself out. For nearly seven years, you shared all privations with us in our mutual quest to reach earth, and barely three weeks after you gave up on it, opting to settle with Ms. Talaxian instead, we find a shortcut home.

Suddenly, we're separated by a gulf of 30k lightyears. Now that we are, it's time to be honest to one another. I sent you off as ambassador to the Delta Quadrant, and you really did deserve that. But let's face facts. Starfleet isn't going to return to the Delta Quadrant anytime soon. We don't really want to return to that Kazon, Krenim and Hirogen-infested place, and even if we did, we couldn't. We really don't have the propulsion technology. If Q's estimate has any truth in it, we're not supposed to reach the Delta Quadrant for another century or so.

But all those revolutionary propulsion concepts we came accross during our voyage, you ask? They'll probably be shelved and never heard of again, in the finest Starfleet traditions. (If you consult our database, you can read up on all the fantastic stuff invented on Picard's and Kirk's Enterprises that we've never used, either.)

Therefore, there probably is going to be no appreciable Federation diplomatic presence in the Delta Quadrant for the foreseeable future, so you shouldn't think of your ambassadorship in that way -- I'm just being honest with you. But you can still make something of it, if only you'd care to think of it in terms of propaganda. You'll have a great chance of preparing the minds -softening them up, so to speak- of the people around you for the day we will return and invite them to join our glorious family.

And that day will come, even if we aren't around anymore to greet it.

Since we'll probably never see each other again, I wish you the best of luck on your lonely mission, well, together with Ms. Talaxian, I suppose.

Oh, and thank you for serving me 7 years of, erm, imaginative coffee variants.

Yours truly,

adm. Kathryn Janeway.

P.S. Destroyed a major Borg transwarp hub located at only 3 weeks from your colony. I hope this makes your neighborhood safer. Might attract a few (dozen) cubes filled with pissed-off Borg determined to reconstruct it just as well, though. Can't really do anything for you from 30k lightyear distance, unfortunately. Good luck!

I am not ashamed to admit I bawl like a baby everytime I see his send off.

One thing that always bugged me about him staying on that asteroid is Neelix was an explorer and traveler at heart. He so deserved a happy ending, but I always felt like he would end up going stir crazy staying in that essential Talaxian fortress.

I thought his send off was great, very touching. I loved how Janeway gave him the "excuse" to stay behind.
