Dune Part 2 2023 (24, 25, 26...)

Was the whole thing filmed in the IMAX ratio or just certain scenes? I watched the IMAX enhanced versions of Black Widow and Eternals on Disney+, and it took me a little while to get used to the aspect ratio constantly changing back and forth between the regular one & IMAX.

Whole film.

Which version is the one shown on HBO Max?

The cut version. The only way to see the full version to date was in IMAX.

You can see some pretty noticable differences if you've seen both, especially with tilts.

Think of widescreen edits to full screen for CRT TV's. Same thing. You'll get the same story but you're missing a good chunk of the visuals and get some awkward edits.

Even though I like the movie, I was only willing to pay for the Blu-ray. I wasn't prepared to stump up for the 4K version nor will I pay premium for an IMAX 1.43:1 ratio version. The story appears to be told well enough in 2.35:1 and 1080p. If I'd seen the IMAX version in theatre, I fear I might feel differently, so I chose not to watch the comparison linked above. If Villeneuve didn't frame for both ratios or didn't edit correctly for each version, such flaws will likely remain unfixed as he doesn't do director's cuts. His appears to be a "warts and all" approach to film-making.

That's why I didn't buy it in the first place.

There's a bunch of YouTube videos showing the difference.

I prefer the standard version, the IMAX version just shows more sky in most of the comparison scenes, it really doesn't feel like I'm missing anything not seeing it.

Piter de Vries was a twisted mentat from Tleilax. I guess it's possible that Villeneuve might mess with the plot and replace him with another twisted mentat instead of
Thufir Hawat
, but I doubt that he will. Count Hasimir Fenring is also a mentat in the book, of course, besides being a failed attempt at breeding a Kwisatz Haderach.

Was that information about Fenring from the first Dune or a later book? I don't remember the first one going into that much detail about him, but it's been years since I read it.

My stepdad loses his shit with the "black bars" on widescreen programming, I can't imagine trying to explain why he has black bars on the side of the screen now.

all that is said about Fenring is he’s a close confident/friend of Shaddam IV, a deadly fighter, married to a Bene Gesserit and a genetic eunuch and almost the kwisatz haderach.

but nothing about being a mental as far as the first novel goes.

Honestly, I couldn't vouch for the complete accuracy of my information about Hasimir Fenring. It's possibly tainted by stuff I've read about FH's Dune universe over the years. He's really only a minor character in Dune and otherwise only mentioned in Children of Dune. I don't think it's been confirmed that he will figure in Villeneuve's second Dune movie. I guess it's possible that his role might be combined with Margot Fenring's, but I believe that would be a mistake given the importance of the failed Kwisatz Haderach theme.

I'm pretty sure Fenring being a Mentat was added in the prequels, not in the original novels, but I'm not 100% certain.
