Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

I re-watched Jodorowski's Dune for the first time in 3 years.

Two things that jumped out at me that I had forgotten:

1) Orson Welles was gonna play the Baron - who's in for crowdfunding Maurice Lamarche to do some of his lines on cameo?

2) "I raped Frank Herbert! I raped him!" How did I forget that moment?!?!

So i'm back after a really horrible week without Internet access (though lack of Internet was the least problem in that week).

As soon as i came back to the EU and had Internet access back on my phone i watched the trailer on a parking lot by the highway :D (yeah.. i'm that excited for the movie).

It was awesome! Now as trailers go it was not strictly speaking reinventing the process but it presented the movie well and that's what a trailer needs to do

I'm over the moon at some of the scenes and had fun placing them into the book scenes where these happen.

Thoughts:

- Shield fighting looks awesome, both Chalamet and Brolin had some sick moves while training ( Paul seemed to get into fighting mood quite quickly ;) )
- Duncan is supercool, both his greeting of Paul on the airfield and fighting the Sardaukar. What broke my heart though was the short scene of him bowing in grief and greeting Paul as Lord Duke meaning he just learned that Leto is dead.

Oh and.. "Let's fight like demons!" Most badass line of the trailer!

- set design is brilliant and the scope is epic, everything looks so fantastic

- the Sandworm looks interesting but the maw looks kinda too big, i would like to see it open and close to get a better look of it but we'll see it often enough in the movie

It was really nice to see actual footage of the movie but several characters are still missing. It's ok though, the movie has to generate interest and not overwhelm the potential audience with tons of people. It is noticeable that they didn't give a release date, i think the studio itself is unsure if they can keep the original December release date so they didn't include a date in order not to box themselves in.

However chances are that they might push the release into 2021 then as Christmas season will see other big movies like Wonder Woman be released and they may want to avoid the competition.

I was reading a wikpedia entry on some-one the other day who'd been considering a role in that film but they turned it down (can't remember the actor's name).

Seems they weren't impressed with one scene were 1000s of extras would take a simultaneous crap.

Synchronized shitting. The true hallmark of a hive Mind.

IMO Jodorowski's Dune would have been horrendous, as would have been Ridley Scott's. Then again, the Dune we did get was pretty horrible (again, IMO).

As it is remains a crazy what if that definitely impacted film to come.

So Cineplex is planning on re-opening across Canada for Tenet, which Dune will likely be attached too. Anyone ready to actually return to a movie theatre? I'm going to be passing. I waited a month after the gym re-opened to make sure it wasn't spreading Covid, I will be doing the same with movie theatres.

I went to see Tenet last week, and it was all right (I went to see Wonder Woman again a few weeks before that, and things were okay too.) It's all in how Cineplex will handle it.

My Dune fandom is predicated entirely on Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson's stories (don't @ me), but I really want to see this new cinematic version of the original tale of Arakkis and collect the Funko Pops, all of which look pretty neat.

Be sure to keep an eye on the HBO series then. It's based on Sisterhood of Dune. Which is why my interest in it died but sounds like you'd be into it.

Ugghh now I'm too excited to go to bed. Dune toys! OHMYGOD! I literally just message don't local comic book store asking if they think they will get the McFarlane stuff in.
