Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

It's a little sad how perfectly that sums of the majority of modern trailers.

I'm hoping we'll get some less cliche stuff moving forward, but I also understand WB wanting to play it safe. This is a huge risk for them.

This cast and director Q&A (with renowned super fan Stephen Colbert) debuted on Twitter just prior to the release of the trailer. The interviews are pretty light on details, but there's some new footage not seen in the trailer as well as lots of behind-the-scenes coverage. Plus, it's always fun to watch Stephen nerd out. :D

I think it's meant to be ambiguous as to whether or not that was a thing that actually happened, or at least happened in quite the way it's framed (much like the bit with Leto II burning the historians alive.) The context of that intro is specifically addressing the mystique surrounding Muad'Dib and his motivations.

As for whether they'll keep making these beyond the first book; I think if it's financially successful they'll at least make an attempt at a DM/CoD trilogy.
It didn't occur to me until fairly recently, but I rather think that the studio isn't approaching this as "Game of Thrones in Space" as many media outlets are presenting it, but as the next 'Hunger Games' franchise.

If you think about it, those first three books are well within the realm of YA storytelling. I mean they're literally about young adults, so that may be the demographic they're targeting rather than older sci-fi fans such as the likes of most of us. If so, then it's a wise move and not a terrible fit for the source material.

As someone who really enjoys the (first 3) Dune books, this is definitely a library rental (a couple of years from now when public libraries are open and safe to go back to...). It takes so much of its visuals from the shitty Lynch movie that its infuriating. Even my Dad, who got me into the series years ago, isn't interested (he hates the Lynch movie even more then I do). It doesn't help that the cast is awful (Baby Paul sucks, Zendaya needs to just go away, and Jessica and Duke Leto are so bland I legitimately don't know if they were even in the damn trailer).

Luckily, the pretty much perfect (outside of some budget issues which don't bother me) 2000s mini series exists. So this film, while frustrating, doesn't really mean anything because I can watch a very faithful live action Dune production whenever I feel like it.

I wouldn't say this movie takes its visuals from the Lynch movie. There are definite influences from the Lynch movie, but there's enough of an original spin on it that this movie has a unique look to it.

I'm not sure what I see in that trailer from the Lynch movie that can't be derived directly from the book.

If we were to see a Guild Navigator or vehicles that closely resembled Lynch's, that would be something. But aside from the fact that the Fremen go with their faces uncovered, there's not much. And that's not Lynch, that's just Hollywood.

This is one project - so very much overdue - that I'm willing to give some slack to...

I get a decent enough feeling from this to think it has potential, at the very least, to supplant the 1984 Lynch film.

(CBSTrek doesn't get much slack from me since it's so overdone, overwrought and empty.)

I did enjoy this comparison between Lynch and Villeneuve visions :luvlove: (I love both)

They could have easily stunt-cast Kyle as Duke Leto but glad they didn't
