Dune 2018 (19,20,21...)

Wonder Woman has officially been pushed back to Dec 25, which is one week after Dune was supposed to open, so anyone who still thought Dune might be released this year, no. No it won't.

Agree but three versions perhaps muddling?. Other than this, Lynch vs SciFi? SciFi vs Villeneuve?

There are aspects of the TV series I like, especially the longer time given to story. The special effects are a minor improvement over Lynch film. But a lot of the prod design/costume choices and casting are horrible

This made me cry

84's Dune was the most expensive movie ever made.

2000's Dune was a cable channel original based on a property that already flopped once and had a budget that reflected that. They did the best with what they had.

CoD was much improved - hiring a competent director being the biggest upgrade, as it lifted everything else.

CoD really improved. I almost think/hope McAvoy (who is an acknowledged Dune fan) might return?

Wonder Woman is moving is to December 25th but Dune is staying where it is on the 18th. To be brutally honest that doesn't sound like a vote of confidence in Dune's ability to attract an audience for a long run.

Dune's not gonna stay there. WB is not going to have two of its biggest movies in what it hopes are its two biggest franchises (DC and Dune) opening within a week of each other during a global pandemic. There's a reason the date wasn't in the trailer.

Edit:. If you're wondering WHY they wouldn't just push back Dune now, I have two words for you: Black Widow.

BW film has never been a 'oh..wow!!!' property. If Marvel believed in it, they should have commited sooner

It's all rather nebulous at this point, no matter what dates get announced. This was all supposed to be "over" by July, and yet here we are in September with no end in sight.

Right now, it's a game of chicken to see which studio blinks first and just abandons exhibitors altogether.

Never said it was. Keeping Dune in the Dec 18 slot keeps Disney from jumping on it. Covid numbers are getting worse, not better. Should Dune vacate the Dec 18 slot early enough for Disney to change its course without much cost, well, Wonder Woman opening a week later has got to be a lot less scary than Tenet's box office take. At least you're in the Christmas holidays and stand to make some money just because of that. Disney can afford to risk losing some money to Wonder Woman in the chance Covid inproves by then. WB, on the other hand, can't afford to lose money to Black Widow.

Dune's move will be announced after BW opens - or at least close enough that Disney can't change it. I bet you my weekly spice ration.

That's always been the dilemma of adapting Dune. It's too expensive to do justice in a TV budget, too long and complicated for a single movie.

It's why I think marketing it like a YA novel series adaptation is kinda genius and may be the happy medium the franchise has been searching for.

They could have easily stunt-cast Kyle as Duke Leto but glad they didn't
You know it just occurred to me that they haven't announced anyone for either Shaddam or Fenrig. Now presumably at least one of them will show up in the second movie, and if you're going to stunt cast Kyle MacLachlan as anyone it's got to be either as The Emperor of the Universe, or as the failed Kwisatz Haderach...
More likely the former since if they follow the book, Shaddam should only appear in the flesh in the final act of the second movie (two scenes, max) while Fenring may or may not even be in it at all.

new comparison version with the SF tv series...and unsurprisingly it doesn't work as well visually

I'm still excited, it's a good trailer, but again...why downgrade the color? The 1984 film in the comparison above looks better than the 2020 film! Surely the new version will be more refined technically, but the new movie will have to carry itself above the others with it's story execution and acting, because visually it's not as exciting as the 1984 film.

Dune was expensive, but even in 1984 it was not the most expensive, in absolute terms or adjusted for inflation.

STTMP is not listed as "the most expensive" but it was more expensive than Dune, at $43-44 million.

That just seems to be Villeneuve's style, Arrival and, especially, Blade Runner 2049 both had fairly meted colors too.

? TMP budget was $10 mil LESS than Dune. They aren't even close.

Edit: I suspect most of this is due to studio accounting & different sources saying different amounts. Regardless of the details, the point remains 1984 Dune was a massive financial expenditure. 2000's Dune did not have anywhere near the same level of financial freedom.

Also, holy shit, it's been 4 years longer between the mini and V's version than it was Lynch's and the mini!
