DS9 on blu ray?

And if the only syndicator in the US isn't willing to pay for HD, that doesn't bode well for the "if you uprez it, they will come" arguments for DS9 internationally.

The BBC's also skint.
BBC America is a digital cable and satellite television network in the United States which is jointly owned by BBC Worldwide and AMC Networks.[1]

Unlike the BBC's domestic channels in the United Kingdom, BBC America does not receive funding from the UK licence fee (which is the principal funding for the BBC's channels within the United Kingdom), as the BBC cannot fund any of its channels that are not available in the United Kingdom.[2] Consequently, BBC America operates as an advertiser-supported channel and accepts traditional advertising. It is also funded by cable and satellite TV subscription fees.

AMC's not. :p

Oops, I can't believe I forgot the X-Files. I binge watched it all a few months ago.

Certain effects shots were obviously just upscaled instead of properly remastered, though.

And there was a lot of stock footage (e.g. Exterior location shots when they went to a different city) that was sourced from VHS, which looked hilariously awful compared to the regular 35mm footage.

I think the best hope for the uprez possibility isn't that broadcasters will pay extra for HD content, but that they'll continue to pay what they're currently paying, but will stop buying SD content altogether.

If you want to keep selling old shows, you've got to supply them in HD at no extra cost. Otherwise you won't sell them at all...

Not to mention DSN already does air outside of the USA, in the UK at least and on 2 different channels. So would SyFy or CBS Action who air it in the UK switch to HD if it was available?

Like anything else, it would depend on the cost.

Anyone know why BBC America isn't upgrading any more TNG to HD? They've been airing remastered S1 and S2 for the past couple of years but that's been it.

In this case it looks like CBS is holding up the release of the HD versions for broadcast. I was just looking on the CBS syndication bible and CBS only has the HD masters for all 7 seasons available for Network broadcast, and Syndication is still SD. Of course, with SD, do we know that BBC America is using HD masters, or are they using SD dubs of the HD masters that CBS supplied? Remember, when TOS-R was first released to Syndication, CBS originally released it in 4x3 SD only (it was only later that CBS released the HD masters for both Network and Syndication), and I wonder how many stations are still using those SD masters for HD broadcast?

For comparison, when I pull up TOS, it has listings for 4x3 Network HD, 4x3 Network HD (Remastered), Network 16x9 Tilt and Scan, Syndication 4x3 HD & Syndication 4x3 (Remastered). Even comparing Enterprise, CBS only has 26 episodes of Enterprise available for Syndication in 16x9 HD, while they are offering all 98 episodes in HD for Network in either 4x3 or 16x9. Even TAS is limited to a Network 4x3 HD contract.

Do they actually broadcast in HD? I thought they were only SD channels, unless it's different on satellite.

Even if they are SD (which I doubt), why would BBC America pay for only two seasons?

Just guessing, but presumably because ratings were too poor to justify buying the rest, but they'll continue to air those they have bought until their rights expire.

Maybe its not BBC's idea. CBS seems be holding up remaining episodes from an SD rotation and Syndication rotation. Right now CBS seems more interested in getting Network contracts for the HD masters. Take a look at Enterprise, only 26 episodes are available in Syndication in High-Definition. So its not unlike CBS to release only select episodes to Syndication in High-Definition. And most stations are probably still airing TNG from Betacam SP tapes, including the new Season 1 & 2 episodes.

Mind you, that someday may well be 2050. But I'm sure they'll have occular implants to allow you to enjoy it fully by then too.

But you'll probably only be able to afford one...

Maybe this guy has got it right. If all of us use the power of affirmation, and intone loudly 100 times every day "DS9 will be on Blu-Ray someday" thus bending the forces of causality to our will, then it might happen.

Then again, it probably won't. :p
