DS9 on blu ray?

Also, I think you're being unfair to the project, being unwilling to buy TNG BD because they redid some effects.

Why should I buy a product that I know will not meet my expectations? I know the picture quality is lightyears ahead of the DVD version, but the original effects are a part of the show for me, and I don't want them to be fiddled around with.

Besides, my budget simply doesn't allow for replacing all my old Trek DVDs with BDs, especially when it would be just in order to be "fair" ... ;)

So you're all telling me that even if I buy these things I won't be able to play them in a few years when my player inevitably dies? Bloody hell. Consumer, throw-away society gone mad.

No. This is the digital age, the data exists thus it is obtainable. Even if your discs die or your player dies, you can always find the material online, and probably a remux without extra compression.

That's not the point. I bought the physical media because I want to be able to play it when I want to. I didn't buy the discs only to buy it again online.

BillJ's response is fair play though. :bolian:
I didn't mention buying anything online. If you want to be completely internet-independent then you can backup or remux your discs yourself and store them locally. No cloud services needed and your data is safe if you have good redundancy and backups.

I didn't buy TNG because I refuse to watch any Star Trek with redone special effects, I'd rather have the original effects upscaled.

They didn't "redo" the effects though, except where the original elements were missing.

Hahaha, remember when Ken Kutaragi implied in an interview that people should want Sony's PS3 so much they should want to get a second job to be able to afford it? Ah, good times.

My understanding is that they redid all the effects, because they had been edited on video and couldn't be transferred to HD.
Sort of.

Effects that had only been done at the video level before (like phaser beams) - yes, those were recreated.

But all of the ship shots, etc., weren't created from scratch with CGI like they did with TOS. They used the original filmed footage of the models, and matched up the edits to the initial video edit.

Yes, there's one or two places where they did have to redo ship shots with CGI (or redo the CGI that had been originally done twenty years ago, like with "Galaxy's Child"). And they fixed outright errors like in "Darmok". But generally speaking it's a faithful representation of the original material with an HD source.

^ Let me put it this way: it's a more faithful repro of the original SFX than anything we saw on TOS-R. Although even I admit to being half/half on nitpicky things like them changing the version of the original Enterprise seen on that one screen in "The Naked Now"... sure, having the refit on there in the original version was arguably a 'mistake', but it was what it was, and I'm not usually on the side of airbrushing history.....

But I disgress. ;)

That isn't "redoing" the effects. It's recompositing. The effects are the same (where possible), they've just been "stitched together" again for an often huge increase in fidelity. So much so that some of them look like new effects....which means the remasters are more faithful to the source material than the original SD masters.

No. What you see in TNG Bluray are the original 'filmed models' rescanned in HD and recomposited. It is the original effects in HD and they look AMAZING!

Technically, they're new effects that use original elements.
Compositing is an artform in itself. :)

Technically, it's new video footage using the original elements. Film transfer is an art-form in itself.

Got a 4K TV coming next week. Kind of dread what things that were finished on video tape are going to look like on it.

Aside from some limited Netflix streaming, I assume there are no 4K transmissions in the US?

4K getting plugged fairly mercilessly in the UK now. There's nothing in 4K for anyone to watch. :guffaw:

Hope you're getting a 70" screen or larger, otherwise the difference won't be notable from what I understand. But regardless, I'd be interested in your findings! :techman:

There's a preview loop on satellite if you tune it in manually (12441 V).

You can still buy Laserdisc players and VCR's on Ebay. You'll be able to find something to play the discs.

Why should I as a consumer have to buy an obsolete device just to enjoy a favorite TV show?:vulcan:

All that I can recommend (if you're still watching old VHS tapes) is a Super VHS deck to watch it on.

Call me a heretic. but I LOVE the remastered TOS and am currently going through TNG-R BRD. My son and I are almost through season 4 of TNG, with 5 already puchased and 6 on the way. I've waited to get fantastic prices from Amazon or their merchants, sometimes as low as $29.99 in perfect condition.

Both shows sparkle like never before. On our HD TV, the DVDs were unwatchable, with character motion way off and washed out colors. We recently watched "Q-Pid" and decided to end the "Vash Trilogy" with "Q-Less" (DS9, first season) and it looked HORRIBLE. Hoping/praying for a DS9-R, but not holding our collective breath.

My son said, "Well, let's get 'Enterprise' next! Maybe enough sales of that series will spark a DS9-R." I told him many fans feel that way and even the Okudas have hinted that may get CBS to remaster the lot if everyone buys TNG-R, but who knows? That's been batted about earlier in this thread quite eloquently.
