DS9 is underrated!

Johnhead99

My Trek experience started with a little of TNG. Then I started watching Voyager every week and DS9 only now and again. Then, I watched Enterprise weekly.

When it wa sall said and done, I liked every bit of each series but Voyager was still my fav. I just bought the DS9 complete series on DVD about 2 months ago. Today, I finished them.

And it is hands down some of the best Trek I have seen. The first 2 seasons were rough (accept for the last season 2 episode). But the rest were amazing.

I'm sorry but that's funny. Just stay here for another year and you might understand why. ;)

What he's referring to, Johnhead99, is that whenever somebody starts a favorite series poll on TrekBBS, DS9 narrowly edges out the Original Series as the winner. (TNG comes in third, while Voyager and Enterprise duke it out for fourth.)

True, DS9 has had a renaissance among Trek fans and TrekBBSers in particular. The general population, though, looks down upon it as one of those other shows that destroyed Star Trek. In a way, it was half a decade before its time. If the later seasons aired during this age of serialized dramas, DS9 would have been far more popular.

I knew it had its following; but I thought it was just for those who grew up on it; like myself and Voyager. And I think you are spot on. Even today, the shows hold up well in my opinion.

I agree about the show being under rated.

Ive always been a huge star trek fan. Anyway my gf bought me a couple TNG seasons on DVD a while back and I watched them and eventually ordered the whole set from amazon when I saw the new pricing.

Well halfway through I ordered DS9 (because It was on tv for a while and then not) and got it, stopped watching TNG, and watched all of DS9.

since then ive gone back to TNG and its not even half as interesting.
the characters and the stories just arnt as interesting to me.

and I love that show too.

there were just a couple seasons of DS9 that were as good as anything on tv. You got to really know the charactors and there werent too many annoying ones. They just do such good character work and thats really what the show was about to me, it reminds me of Lost or Heroes or something

now my GF will watch TNG and even ENT with me...but she wont ever watch a single episode of DS9 it makes no sense to me.

Whats funny is I never cared for the show until I watched it in syndication. When it came out I tried to watch but just didnt care for it (and the first two seasons arnt that great even now), but the over show is fantastic.

and thats saying something since I cant even stand Bjorans, and they are practically in every show.

but what show would have such great supporting characters like garak or Weyoun.
Or what show would have an episode as cool as the one where they try to fake the data rod thing, that was awesome

What’s with all the hate for season 2? Granted it might not be as epic and coherent as subsequent seasons but still beats any of the high points in the other series. I'm currently re-watching DS9 with TNG and VOY along side it. Just saw the Marquis 2-parter in fact. In my opinion the writing is consistently solid, with hardly any stinkers in this season and quite a few gems (the Circle Trilogy, Cardassians, Necessary Evil, Blood Oath, The Marquis, The Wire, Crossover).

to be honest Im not sure what i didnt like about it, I know I dont care much for bjorans and some of the early wormhole species, i also hated kira at the begining so maybe thats what does it for me

I love Season 2. Then again I like Bajor and its politics but even still you have eps like Necessary Evil, The Wire and Crossover.

I think there's a view that DS9 didn't get good until the Dominion showed up which means people might dismiss 1 and 2.

That is how I felt. Exactly how I felt. I thought the Circle episodes were boring.

I have always found the Bajorans and their stories interesting. Never before and never again in Star Trek has an alien species been explored in such depth. To me it was one of the early selling points of the series, making it clear that DS9 was more mature and developed than the others. In my opinion, most episodes that focus on the Bajorans can be easily related to conflicts on earth. It was also an intriguing way of telling stories about religion in the Star Trek universe without offending any one.

The bajoran's *kindof* bother me sometimes... it seems like they ask a lot and give little... but they kindof need it... But yes to both earlier points- DS9 is awesome, and read the relaunch. In fact, they recently put out a huge book with a bunch of the first relaunch novels for a good price... tho I'd still get them individually... :)

There's not much comparison between S1 and S2 of TNG to DS9. DS9 hit the ground running. There was minimal break-in period. Of course that has a lot to do with being built on the foundation of TNG.
Awesome show, I'm up to S4 now.

I think with DS9, as every season goes on, it gets better. I can't think of any other show where that is the case.

On this board, if anything, its overrated. DS9 is my favourite Star Trek by a mile, but it's gained an almost infallible reputation among many who were used to fighting for the underdog before it came out top. Next time we have a 'favourite series' poll in GTD, take a look at where DS9 comes.

Thats true... when we like something and get used to sticking up for something its hard to turn off... same with me and the Jemmies... I wonder if there's a pill for this?
