ds9 in combat

every time ds9 got into a fight it kicked ass. it was awesome.

i cant belive that so many people attacked it.

i think its the best trek ship in combat by far

In Visionary it could be destroyed by one Romulan Warbird. In The Way of the Warrior it could hold off a whole fleet of Klingons. :wtf:

The difference between the two eps mentioned by Pemmer is the complete refit that was done to the weapons grid between S3 and ending at the beginning of S4.

It was. When starfleet took over the station it had only 6 torpedoes on it. With the increasing dominion threat, starfleet tried to arm it to fend off a dominion assault.

I never understood why Starfleet didn't maintain a standing flotilla to augment the station. After all, it became the most critical location in the entire quadrant. Why leave three runabouts and the Defiant to protect it, even with its significant upgrades? Couldn't the UFP spare a task force of a couple Nebula-class, Akira-class, and a squadron of fighters? Even a few ships would make things much more difficult, for DS9 has a big weakness with its fixed location. Why couldn't some ships lob long-range missiles at it from beyond DS9's range? eg, those Cardassian missile-ships as seen in VOY: Warhead? I'd think some interceptor craft would be highly useful.

Kind of like in modern navies. No one would send an aircraft carrier out alone, especially without more than four fighter craft (three runabouts and the Defiant), even if they retrofitted the carrier with additional missile batteries.

I'm guessing they figured the Defiant was enough. Plus, starfleet could send ships there when necessary... hence all the listening stations they had in the gamma quadrant

For the same reason sharks don't really have remoras on bicycles to assist in their personal defense?

Every time we saw the station in battle, nearby friendly starships were a liability rather than an asset: the station was protecting them, rather than vice versa. Which only makes sense, as the station had a greater number of weapons, and apparently stronger shields than any starship could sport. At least they withstood more hits than any starship shield we've seen in action.

Why couldn't some ships lob long-range missiles at it from beyond DS9's range?

A very good question. And obviously it has some sort of an answer, because the fact is that nobody did lob long-range missiles at the station...

Really, it's interesting that nobody lobbed missiles of any sort at the station. Even those Klingon ships we had grown the most used to seeing firing torpedoes, the good old K't'inga battle cruisers, were firing beams at the station. Perhaps the shielding was particularly good against photon torpedoes and the like, rendering standoff attacks futile?

Now, can anybody come up with a technobabble explanation on why torpedoes would be so critically weaker than phaser or disruptor beams in this application...?

I'd imagine they didn't try long range missiles because they would have been destroyed. Not only could the Defiant have been sent to intercept them, but also the stations own defenses would likely have neutralized something like "dreadnought" (I think that's the name of the cardassian missile seen on voyager) easily

I never thought the station's combat ability was very realistic. The part about having thousands of photon torpedoes and lots of launchers was good but phasers and shields require a lot of power. The station was powered by fusion reactors.

Yeah so? Fusion reactors 300 years from now will be able to put out massive amounts of power. And I think the station had six or eight of them...

Only reason starships use antimatter is because of the warp-drive. Apparently you need the exotic reaction byproducts of a matter-antimatter reaction to drive the warp coils.

Of course it all comes down to my technobabble is more techno than your babble. I think six large stationary fusion reactors driving massive shield generators are going to trump anything short of a fanboy's wet dream.

For the same reason sharks don't really have remoras on bicycles to assist in their personal defense?

:guffaw::lol::rofl::D

and all these years I thought it was a mere space station built by the Cardassians w/Bajoran slave labor...silly me

They probably kept attacking it because DS9 never won any battles.

PRE-REFIT
Three Cardassian ships could have easily destroyed it, but called off the attack of their own volition.

The Romulans destroyed it in a sneak attack.

POST-REFIT
Gowron's fleet fought the station to a draw.

The rogue Jem'Hadar blew up a docking pylon, and lived to fight another day.

The Dominion fleet defeated and conquered the station.

The Federation drove the Dominion from the station-- albeit due to the weapons grid being sabotaged.

DS9's win-loss-tie record is an abysmal 0-5-1.

If it weren't for the refit, Klingons would own the station.

One Little Ship, the Defiant, caused the entire Dominion (well, the Klingons did break thru) to leave the station after Rom gummed up the shields (Weyoun's start packing quote).

SF could have put more time and treasure into DS9's defenses.
