Dragons: Riders of Berk discussion thread

^There have been two seasons so far, one called Riders of Berk and one called Defenders of Berk. If you mean the twist in the episodes that debuted just three months ago, that was the second-season finale.
Netfix will be showing next season of Dragons.

About halfway through S2 and really enjoying it (and I really enjoyed S1!)
I love how much continuity they are putting in this year! I mean, the first five episodes were basically one big arc, and there have been heaps of other mini-arcs crossing through the whole season.
Am really hoping the sequel keeps continuity with the series, and that S3 picks up after the second film with an older Hiccup & friends.

The second season wraps up while the characters are still about the same age they were in the first movie, so presumably it's a few years before the sequel. It "connects" only to the extent that it resolves all the series' major story arcs in the finale, so as to clear the board for the sequel. My speculation at this point is that the third season will jump forward to take place after the sequel, but that's just a guess.
I'll be very pleased if this is the case. I haven't seen HTTYD2 yet, but a friend went last night and said it was ace. Am quite pumped.

Good to hear. A sequel that takes things in a whole new direction is generally better than a sequel that just rehashes the first movie.
Me too. I can't judge the continuity with the series, since I've only seen a few episodes, but I would also love to see the series follow on from the 2nd movie.
After a disappointing first weekend when it failed to beat 22 Jump Street, looks like Dragon 2 will be having a hard drop on its second weekend. 200 million domestically looks very unlikely now. Pretty much the same thing happened with KFP2. It is going to do worse than Madagascar 3.
Did they take too long to make Dragon 2? Was it too dark, and did it not have enough humor for kids? Was it crap marketing? Or have people simply moved on?
Looks to me like this franchise never broke out to become super popular outside the families like Shrek or Despicable Me. I keep hearing how the Dragon franchise is very popular with the 18-25 year old female audience. HTTYD has a sizable amount of fangirls in that age range for some reason, which I think is kind of weird since they usually aren't into stuff like this. There doesn't seem to be much interest outside of families.
What went wrong?

I just saw Dragons 2 and it was amazing! I think it's going to be too dark and serious and action-oriented for the younger crowd though. This was not a kid's movie at all.

There was an episode in which Stoick freed Thornado to live on some island where other dragons needed him. As I've said, the later 2nd season took care to tie off every series-specific continuity thread to clear the board for the movie.
This really disapoints me. It deserves to be a big hit.

I'm sadden by this as well, it is a fantastic movie. We saw it in IMAX 3D yesterday at 11:30am and the theater was pretty much empty.
BTW how bad ass was Hiccup's flame sword?! Was that from the show? Much like a lightsaber, I'm not entirely clear on how the blade comes to an end point if it's an expulsion of flammable gas.
One of the many things I loved about the sequel was how utterly competent Hiccup and the others were in combat. They've been doing this five years and they have everything mastered.
And I just remembered something. I think the movie implied that Gobber was gay. When they're talking about marriage, he says he'll never get married for blah blah blah "and one other thing".

The swords hilt had a compartment for a vile of Zippleback gas, when released stuck to the sword as it extended from the hilt. Then he had a device on the hilt to spark the gas. That's how his flaming sword worked.
I actually didn't care for how they handled Gobbers "coming out" so to speak. Not that it happen just how it was handled. It really had no weight to it, nothing more then a throw away line. If maybe he alluded to wanting to get married but not being allowed to, in the same spirit of the film. I think it could have been a bit more impactful. Still it was a nice little nod.
