Spoilers Dr. Hugh Culber Despite Yourself Spoilers!

It was said on Trek that he's not 100% dead. And The Advocate said, "The out actors make history playing the first queer couple in Star Trek’s TV universe, becoming the heroes we’ve all longed for." You DO NOT publish that story on January 3rd then KILL one of them on the 8th. So I am very hopeful, it IS Sci-Fi........wouldn't be the first Trek character to return from the great beyond.

If that's the case, why do it at all? I kind of feel that either he is dead, and they've backpeddled on their diversity promise, or he isn't and they've backpeddled on their 'everyone could die' promise. I'm not sure there's a way out here with dignity intact.

Yeah the problem is that if they manage to resurrect Culber somehow, that could set a Marvel Universe "nobody is ever really dead" precedent that would be irritating. On the other hand, if they don't find a way to resurrect him, we're losing a great character and a meaningful LGBT relationship on television.

Strictly from a story perspective, I can accept Culber's death. But all of the implications around it are troublesome.

I'll agree with you, but depending on how they do it, can't be much less believable than putting memories in McCoy while they grow a new body on Genesis..........

Totally believable ;)

Actually, I don't mind sci-fi's 'nobody dies' thing. But then, they went out and specifically said they weren't doing that!

Well I'm devastated with that plot development... But it would be pretty cheap to just bring him back. Maybe we'll finally meet another doctor on that ship.

i found it to be further game-of-thrones-ification of star trek, which i'm not into.
TV/film has always been using it as a means of creating shock, its just that Game of Thrones has been ramping up the frequency, but I get your point. It's either that or go for the unexpected everyone's laughing but all of a sudden PLOT TWIST! type of death, and I know which I'd prefer.

Yeah..........they can't do it too often, but I would not be opposed to stealing mirror Culbert and laying Prime's memories over his like they have done with Tyler/Voq........maybe they'll even get L'rell to show them how, since she happens to be there.........

they've said straight up there won't be a mirror culber to maintain our last impression of culber prime. but good idea.

I THINK they were just talking about in last nights episode. That's the impression I got from After Trek............(could be wrong) but moving forward I would not count anything out.

i find this exchange particularly revealing:

BERG: “We will see Dr. Culber again. He is not 100% dead.”

HARBERTS: “Everything we do on Star Trek comes out of character and also, as much as we can, grounded in science. Get [the real] Paul Stamets’ book “Mycellium Running,” and give it a read – because his view on the mycellial network and the building blocks of life and how life and death are interwoven will give you very, very good hints as to what’s going to happen.”

i wouldn't hate it if the mycellial network can give us access to the departed in some capacity. i'm looking at you captain georgiou.

Aaron Harberts (executive producer) is gay, and specifically addressed Culber's death during the AfterTrek show (and perhaps elsewhere too, I don't know). I know, just because he's gay doesn't necessarily mean anything, but he stated something to the effect of not having a gay couple on the show just to kill one of them off without any real purpose. I can't imagine he doesn't understand the issue.

Wilson Cruz also said during that show that he believes Culber still has his best scene forthcoming, so who knows how that's going to play out. It appears, at least, that Culber will go out with much more fanfare than what happened in this past episode. They obviously were going for shock value there.

Meh, it's not like anyone has ever really been dead in Star Trek before anyway. I mean, after fifty years the only main character killed on screen who has stayed dead across all forms of Trek media is Tasha Yar, and even she had an alternate timeline version show up and give birth to a Romulan daughter who made a few appearances in TNG's fifth season.

I think Stamets is going to heal Culber and then lose the ability to tie that up.

It was probably the 133 Jumps plus Lorca's messing with the destination that caused Stamets to become as he is, so as long as they don't do that again, he won't have that ability.

I thought the death scene was excellent; shocking, camera didn't linger, cut to next scene. Did I say shocking? I was very surpsied at this, and love the show for taking bold "nobody is safe" moves. Plus, with it being Star Trek, who knows if he's really dead or not. Shame, as he was a good actor and he helped add something different to the show.

I agree, I love the “nobody is safe” feeling it gave. Plus, it wasn’t a random or gratuitous death. It made storyline sense that Culber would be the one to discover the partial truth about Tyler, and that Tyler would react by killing him for reasons he doesn’t even yet realize. From now on, every scene with Tyler alone with someone else will have genuine tension.
