Spoilers Dr. Hugh Culber Despite Yourself Spoilers!

I also need to point out the overwhelming stupidity of Culber confronting Tyler alone when he's discovered that he isn't who he thinks he is.

I mean who is that stupid.
Stupid things happen in Starfleet all the time. The TOS was based on it; Captain, XO and doctor always going on away missions together into the unknown... yeah very smart policy.

I really like Culber and do hope to see more of this character.

What a way to add even more tension to Tyler’s character, though. He’s capable of killing At any time and what will he do when pressured in the MU. This ep was almost too much, too soon!

I'm a little worried about the whole "bury your gays" backlash his death might recieve. For a show that revels in it's representation, that was very risky to kill him off. Maybe they do find a way to bring him back and this is unfounded. Wasn't there a situation in a show called the 100 which got massive backlash because of this particular storyline?
This is my real issue with it, and the episode. It is such an annoying and overdone trope that the gay character dies. Especially when in a stable, positive relationship. It's nasty and problematic, and I'm surprised at the Discovery writing team given how much they harped on about diversity before the show aired.

One of the producers or writers his gay himself IIRC. My mind is blanking on who

my problem with the death of culber is twofold:

1. he died with no fanfare and no emotion. for a character who had been so warmly received by the audience, his death was unemotional. discovery hasn't been a particularly sentimental show, but i really think the show missed an opportunity to grieve culber, or even just feel the ramifications of his demise. the episode moved on so quickly, that moment needed to be bigger and feel more weighty. i know his death will have ripples in future stories, but the moment of his death came and went and it was ugly.

2. discovery is quickly dispensing with diversity. i understand their reasons for killing culber, even for killing georgiou and landry. but so far the series has treated its women of color and now gays pretty terribly. i don't think for a second they have an anti-diversity agenda (clearly it's the opposite), but it's an unhappy accident they need to be more aware of in the future.

I have a feeling...........that by the end of season our couple will be intact again. I do not know how, but with Harberts involved, and them just being on the cover of The Advocate.........I feel like there is more coming.

I'm pretty sure that will feature heavily on the next episode...

This aspect of it is something that didn't occur to me right away but after seeing comments from LGBTQ viewers on Twitter after the show, I understand that and it's a totally valid problem. I'm curious to see whether they walk it back somehow. Wilson Cruz did hint on his Twitter that this may not really be the end. Still, I'm sure that death was upsetting and problematic for a lot of people regardless of how the writers deal with it or rectify it later.

I liked this about his death. To us it was a shock, but it helps to illustrate that to TylerVoq, it was nothing, which only adds to the impact.

Also, this would have been scripted, filmed, edited etc long before the audience would have had time to get to know him, so as much as the writers can predict who the audience is going to take to, they can't know and act accordingly.

you're probably right. i hope so.

i found it to be further game-of-thrones-ification of star trek, which i'm not into.

Again, the weird thing is that immediately after the episode they all but said that Culber is coming back (whether in mirror form or otherwise). Even if they had this planned, they stepped on the suspense/controversy - presumably to quell the outrage. But if they didn't want the outrage, Tyler could have just knocked him out and it would have had the same story effect. That really makes it seem like they made a 180 on Culber's arc after this episode already went into production.
